On the Republican side, Eisenhower passes away of his heart attack in 1955. After a heated struggle, Nixon clinches the Presidential nomination in 1956.

On the Democratic side, Stevenson gets a second chance, and selects the young John F. Kennedy as his runningmate.

You think a running mate can make that much difference on a ticket? Plus I don't think Kennedy would have run with a segregationist. He seemed too honorable.

Stevenson wasn't really a die-hard segregationist. Yes, he supported 'states rights' but wouldn't have done anything on the issue either way.

Having a running mate could make a lot of difference. Unpledged beat Eisenhower in SC, and racked up 17% in AL.

Kennedy was far from honorable.  Ever heard of Marilyn Monroe?
