A group of conservatives unhappy with the results of the 1976 GOP Convention decided to run Senator James L. Buckley on the Conservative Party ticket. Helms, who was responsible for Reagan's comeback in the NC primary and then his defeat at the convention for picking a liberal running mate, was chosen as Buckley's running mate.
Helms focuses on MS, NC, OK, VI, & FL, while Buckley Campaigned in NY and the Mountain West.
Does the Buckley/Helms ticket hurt carter in the South? or just split GOP voters? Discuss with maps.
