nursing nursing nursing...if you can handle the job mentally and physically, it's a great career to get into.  Even more so if you're a dude.  Tough job though (although it doesn't have to be, especially once you've "paid your dues" (in the metaphorical way, not the literal "union" way)).

Precisely. Although demand for nursing school spots has gone up dramatically the last few years, so it's not as if it is easy to get in or anything.

As for the best major, engineering is the best when it comes to getting a job right out of college. In almost any other field, if you want the big money you have to go get your master's/doctorate or professional degree.

...I'm still deciding between that and Urban Planning.  Which in essence would give me the same education but with more of a traditional focus on more tangible classroom topics.  On the other hand I might just skip it and jump right in.
Must be nice!  Of course, I guess we're still 3-4 years away from the point at which you could actually sell anything.

It'll be nice when I can come up with the cash for it. Wink

Best Undergrad College Degrees By Salary     Starting Median Salary     Mid-Career Median Salary

Aerospace Engineering    $59,600    $109,000
Chemical Engineering    $65,700    $107,000
Computer Engineering    $61,700    $105,000
Electrical Engineering    $60,200    $102,000

Even though I'm EE, I'd almost rather flip burgers than work around a bunch of engineers.

I am currently going for a History major.  Are the numbers for that one a good thing?

It depends on what you want to do with it. I was a history major and found a job that suits me in publishing, but publishing as a whole is not a healthy industry, and it also depends on what school you went to. And my starting salary was below what they say in this chart, even adjusting for inflation. History is most useful for developing communications, writing, and analytical skills, and be prepared to sell that when you go on interviews. And for God's sake, unless you are brilliant *and* independently wealthy *and* don't care what part of the country you live in, don't jump for a career in academia.

It depends a lot on where you live, but in most places 38,000 is plenty for a single just starting out - you won't be rich obviously, but it's enough to pay the rent, eat out once in a while, go out on the weekends, and go on a trip or two every year. $70,000 makes one pretty middle class.

It makes me wonder if that isn't the average pay of 1 lawyer making a ton of money and 4 professionals in other fields making significantly less.

The is the PC term for what was formerly known as the personnel department. And secretaries are now administrative assistants in case you didn't know. Insurance folks are risk managers, and on and on it goes.

I guess back when I was considering majoring in Business Management and minoring in Chemical Engineering, I was pretty darn smart. I also have considered minoring in IT.

Heh. Physics as it stands would naturally be the highest natural science.

I wonder how much of it is biased by physicists that go into Wall Street.

Gosh, I guess I am lucky to be a lawyer.

When I was younger, my parents prohibited my sister and me from dating lawyers.  I'm dead serious.

I can now see why.

No offense, Torie. Smiley

No offense taken Ronnie (inter alia, any parent would be insane to let me date their issue Tongue). What was your parents'  reasoning behind the no lawyer rule?  Just curious.

It is odd I must admit that parents would be issuing rules as to who their issue could date after they reached the age of majority however, since typically lawyers are at least around 24 or so before they become lawyers, and I assume that the issue was not about you and your sister being under 18 dating lawyers in their mid twenties. Even odder is if the age of majority issue actually follow their parents' rules as to whom they may date.  My parents knew better than to even suggest such a thing, although my mother was worried about Catholics, but knew better than to vocalize that with me after I reached 18 and decamped to college.

Well, it just happens that they were both married to lawyers that screwed them over.

If you decide what subject to study at uni based on this sort of thing, you shouldn't be going to uni in the first place...

Don't worry, people go to university based on their parents' class status, not based on anything internal to their own little empty heads.

True dat.  Though like opebo said, most people don't "decide" to go to college.
