I liked the style of populism from the midwest and southern areas during the late 19th century.

Figures someone as annoying as you is a Bryanite.

People called them populists but they were poor farmers who wanted a silver standard, estate tax, and an income tax in order to fix their economy.

Well I care more about economic progressivism than social progressivism, so I'll take populism.

The liberal economic policy would fix many of the problems that social conservatives like to rave about, anyway (much more effectively than social conservative policy would, I might add).

Populism is a completely relative term that describes the "popular" opinion of a group of people.  Many current populist ideas are also favored by libertarians: auditing the FED, ending corporate welfare, leaving social/moral legislation to the local level, et cetera.

Libertarianism focuses on the rights of the individual, which sometimes overlaps with the populist thought of the day and sometimes is completely different, since every human is unique.

The main issue is that when the Political Matrix refers to populism, it is essentially talking about Bryanite populism. Rhetorically speaking, extreme conservatism/liberalism/libertarianism can be very populistic, despite having little in common with the PM definition of populism.

Weaver Populism is pretty orgasmic. Modern "populism" is just a veil worn by conservatives to trick people into voting against their own interests.

I don't really count populism as a ideology, more of a political tactic. You probably mean statism, and Libertarianism is multidutes preferable to statism.

Indeed, but in-itself, it is not. I've always thought of it as a method used to represent the needs of ordinary people, which isn't really an ideology, since it is commonly used by all political movements.

However, I don't consider it to be the antithesis of libertarianism, as many people here do.

Libertarianism. At least its an actually defined ideology with stated goals and ends. Granted many times libertarians take things too far, though I generally agree with the rhetoric, if not the actions, of some libertarians, but that's a much better option than the blind appeals to popularity and mob rule, which is usually what Populism entails.

Populism isn't an ideology. Get a clue.
