Meg Whitman (R) — 46%
Jerry Brown (D) — 43%

"Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has built a massive edge over her GOP rival Steve Poizner while taking a narrow lead over likely Democratic nominee Jerry Brown, according to results released today by the nonpartisan Field Poll.

Her move is a major feat in a state where Democratic voters far outnumber Republicans.

Whitman won the support of 63 percent of likely Republican primary voters while Poizner was backed by only 14 percent, with Whitman's lead growing by 21 percentage-points since the Field Poll last surveyed voters in January.

Whitman also overtook Brown in a possible general election matchup, winning the support of 46 percent of likely voters compared with Brown's 43 percent, the poll found. Brown had led Whitman by 10 percentage points in the January poll and by 21 points in October."

Ugh why can't it be Poizner or Campbell as the Republican nominee. Whitman's relentless attacks on Poizner the last month have really made me start to hate her.

I believe Brown can still win, but its going to be a much tougher race than previously thought with Meg Whittman.

The problem with campaign-finance reform is that exempts self-funding candidates who believe in the higher bidder winning.

Tell that to the Supreme Court.

I'm not buying this yet.  It may be closer than the Democrats want, but I think Brown will pull it out in the end, if he ends up being the nominee.

This is more pro-R than I was expecting...pro-R sample or is the budget crisis having an effect here?

Preventing people from spending their own money is authoritarian.

You're not prohibiting them from spending their own money, just what they can spend it on.

For example, did you know, that no matter how much money you make, it's illegal to spend it in order to create a factory counterfeiting US Currency??

It is essentially censoring political speech at that point.

The two are not at all similar.

With Whitman spending ridiculous amounts of money, I'm not surprised.  This is definitely a toss up.

Another poll comes out with Meg Whittman ahead, she is now the favorite, we should of had a primary, Brown may not have been the right choice.  He is a seasoned politician but he may not fit in California, he may be too liberal.

Phil Angelidas was liberal and he still lost. California is known to vote for compassionate conservatives in a state election and vote solid democratic in the presidential.

The last Democrat to run California statewide was Gray Davis and he was a moderate, we still should have had a primary, brown shouldn't have been corrinated.

It's also Governor Moonbeam and the guy who lost to Reagan - people remember that.

Would Gavin Newsom have been any better though? He was polling even worse than Brown IIRC.

This race is obviously going to be decided on budget issues. Vague attacks on Whitman being a heartless CEO isn't going to gain Brown much traction. If anything will make a difference in this race, it will be something specific that distinguishes the two on  budget priorities.

If Democrats are serious about beating Whitman, they need to draft Dianne Feinstein to run.

Brown seems too much what was California, not what is California. The best candidate in the fiscal crisis is someone who can embody what will be California.

Yup.  She seems to be a very smart lady from what I have gathered.  Also, I agree with most of her positions.

Maybe she would run California just like she's running her PR campaign: by ignoring it.
