Idea for poll comes from this story.

I've never thought of it as being a remotely racist word, though that probably has a great deal to do with where I live.

No.  Perhaps the Uhuru's would be better off resigning from their jobs and devoting their time to writing a book of seemingly innocuous words that could possibly, remotely be construed as racist so that we have something to reference and research before we ever open our mouths.

To be honest... in my opinion... oftentimes the most racist or demeaning word in the English language is "them".  But like hoodlum, it all depends on the intent behind the word.

No its not racist. Its just modern race baiters who are making this an issue to maintain the status quo in the education system (failure) and also, maintain their own relevance.

Racist?  No way......I've heard hoodlums described in racist terms though.

I've personally never heard it used in a racist way...in fact I believe I've only heard it used by people describing white kids/teens...

Main Entry: hood·lum
Pronunciation: \ˈhüd-ləm, ˈhu̇d-\
Function: noun

1 : thug; especially : one who commits acts of violence
2 : a young ruffian

I see no mention of race in the definition, so no.

So, no.  This term has never been racist, nor should it be seen as such.

You could actually make the case that it's a less racist alternative for thug (which could either be used with its current connotations, or with the old thugee connotations).

Yes, this is the truth. The point of language, after all, is communication and meaning.

Everyone I know who uses it (who are all over 60) uses it to describe young anti-social males, so I don't see where race comes into this.

No, and anyone who voted yes is probably a hoodlum.
