...that made you associate with whatever party you associate with? (Note that it's not required that your answer be an election in which you actually voted.)

For me, 1972. That's not to say that I would be a Democrat before then, but 1972 was THE election that contributed the most to my being a Republican today.

For the US, I remember not liking George Bush in 2000 even as a kid, but 2008 I guess, as that's when I first started paying attention.

For the UK, it was 2005.

I never knew that you enjoy Republican landslides.

Oh, so you decide which party to support based on who won the election?

On that same note, 1964 would have made me a Republican. Too bad the Republican Party is nothing like that today.

No, it's just that quotes like "too bad the Democrats aren't like 1972" are what I'd expect from Republicans.

Well I'd say its pretty disturbing that someone would be inspired to join the Republican Party by Richard Nixon, especially in 1972.

Except that it was McGovern who inspired me to become a Republican.

Well that's even more disturbing then. A crook and a scheming conniving bastard over a great American patriot.

Issues do matter ya know. McGovern was pretty radically leftist, basically admitting he would go begging to the NVA if they didn't release our POWs. Anyway, I've always been a Democrat, but the election that really sold it for me was 2006. I was sick of the loosing mindset and was beginning to question my party allegiance until I saw guys like Bob Casey and Jim Webb win.

My answer to that question is Bill Clinton. I just cannot get over the lack of family values in the democratic party.

I agree. The party of Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, and Mark Foley is the true party of family values. Roll Eyes

As someone who prefers the Democrats...

Definitely since 1980.

1968 if I wanted to go a little bit earlier.

1896, with exceptions in the 1930s and 1990s.

(Smith and Truman were both good candidates, however I couldn't see myself voting for either one. I don't think I would have voted for Goldwater, either, although he improved with age)

Historically, 1932 is when I would have definitely become a Democrat.

In real life it was 1988 since that was the first one I really remember well (vaguely remember 1984 and 1986).

There was a presidential election in 1986?

1972. I can declare with a sound conscience that I am a McGovernite first and foremost.

The current Democratic Party bears no resemblance to that of George McGovern in 1972.

Wow, you started paying attention to politics at a very early age. You were 9 when you got into politics, while I was 12 (in 2004, during the presidential campaign).

Though I had thought myself a Democrat since I started paying attention at all (early 90s), I wouldn't say I was that committed to the party until the 2000 election, and most specifically the aftermath. Of course I missed being able to vote in that one by a couple months which kind of irked me to.
