When it was realized that none of the leading candidates for the presidency would pledge to support redress for the Saints, Joseph Smith held a historic meeting in the mayor’s office at Nauvoo on January 29, 1844, with the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and others. It was unanimously decided that Joseph Smith would run for president of the United States as an independent.

Smith's Platform consisted of:
Ending slavery
Reducing congressional pay
Power for president to send army to put down angry mobs.
annexing Oregon and Texas
Expansion of US (with Native's consent)

June 27, 1844 Smith was arrested in Carthage Illinois. As an angry mob appeared outside the jail to kill Smith. The mob however was beaten back by a militia formed by the Mormons and Smith lived.

July 4, Sidney Rigdon, Smith's running mate, was replaced by the newly converted Governor of Massachusetts, George N. Briggs.
After a close election, on December 4th America was shoked when it became clear Joseph Smith was the next president.

Smith 33% PV, 139 EV
Clay 30% PV, 60 EV
Polk  36% PV, 76 EV
other 1%

December 17, 1844, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Louisiana announced secession. within the following week Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia followed.

December 28th, delegates from the six states met and formed The Confederate States of America and appointed John C. Calhoun as President.

In Michigan, a Detroit small business owner Joshua Romney, who recently became a latter-day saint, decided to enlist in the Union army. He joined a volunteer regiment, The 20th Michigan, as a Lt. Colonel.

February 27, in the final days before President elect Smith took over Davis decided to try and knock Virginia out of the fight early. Davis orderd Scott to march on Richmond. Before Scott could get far, he was stoped by confederate General Taylor at the Battle of Happers Ferry, taking just over 3,000 casualties. With the 20th Michigans Colonel being shot, their 2nd in command Lt. Col. Romney assumed control.

After the first day's fighting around the city Kearny is beaten back and digs in behind a ridge north west of Lewsitown. On the Second day The commander of the Illinois troops General Stephenson, ordered an assault on the ridge and sent 1,000 men forward. Within minutes over 500 were cut down by cannon fire and volleys coming from the rebel infantry. By noon southern cavalry had successfully snuck around the union lines and began to hit their rear. Broken, the union forces began a retreat to Springfield, clearing the way towards Chicago

May, 10, 1845. Col. Joshua Romney was riding towards Chicago by train with his regiment. The 20th Michigan had sustained 50% casualties while fighting out east. At the last stop, in a small Ohio town, there word that Brittish soldiers had been spotted in northen Maine heading south east towards the coast. There was also a rumor that the Brittish would try and attack Detriot.

Out east, President Smith was speaking with Mexican diplomats on the possiblilty of Mexico intervening, an invasion of the CSA, in exchange for Indian teritory, and the return of Texas. reluctantly, Smith agreed. Between war with Britain, half the country seceding, and anarchy in the major cities, this seemed to be the Union's last chance at victory. Word had just come in of Chicago falling to General Kearny...

May 11, Encouraged by the rioting in Baltimore, General Taylor decided to invade the north again, hoping to seize all of Mayland and end the war. Crossing the Potomic north of Washington with a force of 28,000, Taylor met up with Scott and his force of 23,000 at the small town of Rockville. After a day of fighting, both sides taking a little over 6,000 in casualties, Scott withdrew to Washington on the orders of President Smith.

May 15, Brittish troops landed north of Detroit and began making their way towards the city. That night The Michigan troops called back began to arrive.

The Battle of Detroit, May 16-17.
There was an strange quiet as the 20th Michigan marched through the streets of the once lively city. Artillery could be heard north of the town where the brittish were dug in. As Romney reached the front lines he was orderd to lead and assult on the brittish line. Romney odered his troops forward as a mortor expoled over head, several of his men fell. "Double time!" the pace pickes up as the men continued forward, the Flag bearer was struck down, quickley being replaced. "Charge!" Romney's men surged forward into a wall of brittish soldiers. After firing a volly, a vicious melee fight began. after what seemed like an eternity the fight was a stalemate, the republic couldent afford another stalemate, However seeing thay they could'nt break through Romney orderd a retreat. The 20th Michigan camped out to the south of Detroit in the rear, that day they had seen there regiment cut in half again.

at 3:00 AM the next morning, Col. Romney woke up so the sound of chaos. As he looked out of his tent Detroit was burning. The brittish launched a suprise assault at night, they were already south of the town heading toward their camp. Some men were desperatly trying to form a line, other racing to get away. Romney hurried to get to his men but it was too late, most had already routed or had fallen. He watched in tears as his home burned around him and his men fell. Then a final volly, Joshua Romney was dead. He died with out knowing the entire Romney family had perished as well in the battle.
The casualties:
USA- 11,560 Brittain- 5,032

May 20, 1845. President Smith, knowing General Taylor would take Baltimore, had earlier order General Scott back down to Washington to Protect the Capital. At the same time Smith decided to give a successful young regimental commander from Ohio, William Sherman, the Rank of brevet Major General and ordered him to assemble a new army in Philadelphia to keep Taylor busy and away from Washington. Smith hoped that If Taylor was defeated then the Mexican would intervine.

June 2, After a hasty convention following Kearny taking Chicago, Illinois declared its secession from the Union to join the CSA. fearing for their lives, the Mormon began to flee Illinois. Some went up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and started new settlements.

June 15, Sherman, now ready with a force or nearly 20,000 men, marched southwest to Westminster Maryland to draw taylor out of Baltimore. It worked. Sherman then moved south into Howard county putting himself between taylor and D.C.

June 17, With Sherman keeping taylor occupied, General Scott moved his force across the Potomic and seized Alexandria.

June 22, 1845. In Texas the rebels were getting anxious. There were rumors that the Mexicans might invade. Then on a hot June day it came, in Austin the governor read reports of Mexican troops crossing the Nueces River and heading north toward San Antonio. Quickly the Texans mobilized their forces and prepared for the upcoming battle.

June 23. Washington D.C. was in chaos. nobody knew for sure what was going on. From casualties coming back into the city it looked as if Sherman's forces were destroyed by Taylor, but by an act of God, Sherman held and was able to contain Taylor in Maryland.

meanwhile up north, the British Army was clearing away any opposition in Michigan. The Mormons losing hope of victory began a mass exodus to the UP of Michigan were they established a new country, The Free State of Romneystan, named in honor of their fallen hero.

June 25. San Antonio. The Mexican Army was laying siege to the city. The defenders were preparing for the Alamo part II when reinforcements finally came. In a field north of the city the two forces squared off. After hours of fighting it appeared all hope was lost for the Mexicans when the tide suddenly changed. Galloping out on a white stallion rode Gen. Geraldo E. Johnson. With a pistol in one hand and a saber tightly gripped in the other, he rallied the troops into one final bayonet charge that broke the Texans. the next day San Antonio fell.

It'd be cool if the Confederacy were to overtake the Union, instead of forming it's own separate country.  Meaning, it would be the revolution every few decades that Jefferson envisioned.  I don't quite see why the South would secede over a...oh, I get it, because he wanted to end slavery.

May 1, 1845. President Smith was looking out the window when a messenger came in giving him letters sent from New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, and Maryland announcing secession. Just yesterday reports came upper new England had fallen to the British. to make thing worse many union soldiers were defecting to the CSA. Losing all hope, Smith reigned the presidency and fled to Romneystan, where upon arrival was appointed President.

May 5. Vice President George N. Briggs was sworn in the new President. Seeing no chance left for any victory, Briggs surrendered to to the Confederates. within the next month the remaining Northeastern states surrendered as well. After 68 years, the United States had fallen.

With the fight against Smith finally over, President Calhoun could turn his attention to the British and the Mexicans.

May 18
.  The Confederate capital was moved to Washington D.C.

In Texas the Mexican army  had reached the Brazos river. after a long struggle at Washington-on-the-Brazos the Mexicans were defeated and fell back to San Antonio.

May 21. The British Army began to cross into Ohio. Calhoun sent General Kearny to meet them at Toledo in hopes of turning them back.
