Where did you vote for?

In the end I went with San Francisco, all the benefits of the Netherlands are present in San Francisco and not all that enforced even if not technically legal.

San Fransisco otherwise.

Netherlands doesn't have a public option. Their health care system is based off forced insurance buys like in Massachusetts.

California likely WILL have a public option soon once Jerry Brown is Governor, the legislature has passed it after all only to have Arnold veto it.

You're pretty grossly mischaracterizing the Dutch healthcare model. Private insurance is cheaper and more equitable in the Netherlands than a public option would be here.

If California gets single-payer, that would be sweet, but I'm really not holding my breath, especially because Brown has been waffling on the issue.

I suppose San Francisco, but Urk doesn't sound like an absolutely terrible place. On Wikipedia it says the city has the same birth rate as Utah, which seems bizarre by European standards. I wonder if there used to be a direct pipeline from Urk to God-Awful Sioux County, Iowa.

How is Urk not terrible? It basically is Sioux County in Europe.

I've never been to Urk, but I've been to the Dutch Bible Belt. Trust me, you don't know what you're talking about. You really couldn't distinguish it from a lot of other small Dutch towns, except that a lot of them go to church. Dutch people are generally pretty conservative in their personal behavior and dress anyway, even if they're not religious.

SF. Among other things, Urk is this tiny village on the "wrong" side of the  Zeider Zee, and thus too remote from the action I would be looking for in Amsterdam.

Everyone in Holland speaks English, and I mean everyone. It is odd I know, to listen to the tram drivers speak near flawless English but they do. But then Dutch is the closest language to English that there is on the planet, save for Frisian.

I kind of doubt this would be true in Urk, although it is definitely true in Amsterdam.

Anyway, Urk is creepy. A place where over a third of the population votes for a party that until 2006 opposed female suffrage? Yeah, no thanks.

Oh, well I didn't know about Urk's cultural ambiance. I don't think I would fit in very well there.  Smiley
