JFK isn't assasinated and also begins withdrawing U.S. troops from Vietnam in 1964. Everything else stays the same. You pick the VPs. How would this election turn out? Discuss, with maps.

I predict the bright and charismatic incumbent Jack Kennedy would be popular what with his corporate tax cuts, a strong economy and a relatively peaceful international stage.  The civil rights bill would prompt an exodus of southern Democrats to an indy candidate.  Rockefeller wouldn't be able to unite the Goldwater Republicans and would be too much "northern elitist" for the disenfranchised southerners.

What would lead JFK to begin withdrawing troops?

I read that he thought Vietnam was an unwinnable war and thus he decided to get the U.S. out of Vietnam.

I agree with this map. I suppose NY and CT can go either way. I know Rocky is from NY, but JFK won it by 5% in 1960 (a very narrow election) and I think as an incumbent he might be able to win NY even against a native son.

I'm gonna say George Wallace runs as a Third Candidate.

Kennedy/Johnson:  299 EV
Rockefeller/Ford:  192 EV
Wallace/Griffin:  47 EV

Kennedy/Johnson:  43%
Rockefeller/Ford:  40%
Wallace/Griffin:  17%
