you fill in the box with the 4 in it (colored red, not on the official ballot though) for Bush, but it looks like you should fill in 14....this is screwy

Peroutka and Kerry will benefit from this. That is really stupid. Bad arrow placement.

Isn't that 2 different sheets of paper?

If so, what's the problem?

And then there is the unecessary and confusing 'candidate disqualified' box. Ohio is doing a good job of vying to be the next Florida.

Luckily this is only a problem on the absentee ballots.  The ballots are apparently aligned when using the voting machines but they do not when voting absentee.

I thought Nader was on Ohio's absentee ballot? Is this that?

1.  You have to understand that the punchcard fits into a "sleeve" and the "ballot" is a booklet.  You find your candidate and punch the hole next to the candidate's name.

2.  Disqualified refers to Nader, I think.

BTW: Why are Peroutka and Badnarik listed as "Other Party Candidates"?

Another reason why punch-card ballots suck.  Every state should be required to use the mechanical booths.  They have been proven to be reliable for decades.

I may be seeing things, but it looks like the graphic was altered from "12" and "14" to "2" and "4" next to Badnarik and Bush.  There seem to be some residual grey were the "1"s were.  It would make since, because the Disqualified candidate would be 8 and the five candidates would be numbered 6, 8, 10, 12, 14.

But 4 is a red square, which seems like the logical color for the Republican square.

Unless the color was added too.

Why would a punchcard be colored?  You can't see the card when it is inside the slot.  And why would the Dems=Blue, Reps=Red scheme be used on a state ballot?  It's not like they are the official colors of the parties.

Yes we should not have ballots that looks like this but it could be a fraud.  This is why I think we need national standards on ballots.

It was already mentioned by the poster that the image was pre-colored.

I think the color highlights have been added by someone, probably to add emphasis to the number alignment discrepancy.

But I doubt this photo has been altered, based on the phone calls Cuyahoga County officials have been receiving: AP Story
