It'd probably be a nasty fight between Biden and Hillary where Biden eventually overcame.

First off, the inclusion of Edwards and Michelle just goes to show how ridiculous this poll is in the first place.  But I supposed I'll dignify it with a serious response nonetheless.

My initial thought is Hillary.  There is still an enormous amount of latent support for her left over from the primary.  However, it really depends on what "something" is.  Did Obama die?  If so, how?  Or is "something" some sort of scandal?  Who was involved?  Does "something" imply Obama is removed from office?  If so, for how long is Biden the president?  "Something" is just too vague.

If something happens to Obama, Biden will be president. So Biden.

If Biden declines to run (and/or his presidency is a disaster), Hillary.

Is it really likely that Hillary would go Ronald Reagan on Biden in the primaries though? Was a sitting president ever challenged by his own secretary of state? Or are we assuming that Hillary is going to resign a few months before Iowa? (That's if Biden doesn't make her veep.)

I don't wish any physical ill to Obama, but Biden presidency would be awesome, simply from the entertainment standpoint. He would probably start World War IV with his mouth before you could say "hairplugs".

If that "something" is a death *knocks on wood*, then Biden would likely be nominated.

If it was a political scandal, probably Hillary.

Probably Biden, though I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up facing a difficult primary challenge against Hillary or some other well-known Democrat.

I don't wish any physical ill to Obama, but Biden presidency would be awesome, simply from the entertainment standpoint. He would probably start World War IV with his mouth before you could say "hairplugs".

Wait, then if Biden would bring us into World War IV, what was World War III? Was it the Cold War? The War on Terror?

A lot depends on when the something happens.  If it were today or close to the election then it would be Biden.

If it were to happen in late 2011/early 2012, I could see a challenger arising, but I doubt it would be Clinton, especially since Biden would likely nominate her for the Vice Presidency.  How about Evan Bayh? Wink

More seriously, if Gov. Strickland of Ohio can rebound in the polls and be reëlected this year, he would be a ]contender for 2012 in this scenario or for 2016 if as expected Obama is the 2012 nominee.  (Not having followed Ohio politics closely I don't know if there a reason beyond teh economy he is doing poorly right now.)

I think Bayh could be a contender in some circumstances.

Biden, unless he decides not to run, in which case it will be Hillary.
