A very subjective topic, but lets compare and rank every Democratic/Republican President and presidential candidate since 1960 on how "left" or "right" they were in comparison to their fellow partymen.

Obama
Dukakis
Kerry
Humphrey
Gore
Clinton
Kennedy

Republicans (conservative to liberal):

LBJ was much more hawkish than Obama, and being hawkish is typically considered to be a conservative position. As for domestic policy, LBJ and Obama are about as liberal in this regard, even if LBJ had much more backbone to push through his agenda. Also, LBJ was against abortion and gay marriage, while Obama is in favor of both (or at least, he acts like he is). Thus LBJ's hawkisness and his opposition to abortion and gay marriage make him more conservative than Obama in my opinion. As for Kerry being more liberal than Clinton & Gore, I seriously doubt that--Kerry was in favor of maintaining the Patriot Act and in favor of continuing the Iraq War. Meanwhile, Kerry was about as liberal as Clinton and Gore on social and economic issues.

The idea of gay marriage wasn't even on the radar back then, so thats inaccurate. The Walter Jenkins incident in 1964 proves that he was certainly more progressive than most people of the time on the issue of gay rights. I'm not comparing all the Presidents by today's idea of Liberalism. LBJ was more liberal by 1960's standards than Obama is by whatever this period we're in now's standards.

As for Kerry being more liberal than Clinton & Gore, I seriously doubt that--Kerry was in favor of maintaining the Patriot Act and in favor of continuing the Iraq War. Meanwhile, Kerry was about as liberal as Clinton and Gore on social and economic issues.

And you don't think Clinton and Gore would have supported both if they were President in 2004? Kerry was against the death penalty ("except for terrorists"). Just because Gore is a big environmentalist now doesn't mean he would have been a left winger, he ran a very non-left wing campaign in 2000. Clinton had a bunch of small wars in the 90's when we could have been at peace, he wasn't afraid to use military power. Lets not forget Clinton/Gore's semi-ending of Welfare and support for DOMA. Kerry voted against DOMA in 1996, when few cared about the issue.

I don't think Kerry is more liberal than Humphrey. Humphrey wanted to expand the Great Society, create universal healthcare, and keep the upper margin income tax rate at about 70%. Kerry never wanted to do any of that. Also, I think Nixon was more liberal than Ford since he supported universal healthcare while Ford did not. Finally, how come you think Nixon was more liberal in 1960 than in 1969-1974?

By 1968, Nixon had become more socially conservative what with his anti-hippie "silent majority".  Eight years earlier, Nixon was more socially moderate/liberal, had about the same domestic agenda (moderate) and foreign policy (pragmatist).  Interestingly, Kennedy ran to the "right" of Nixon on foreign policy in 1960.
