Johnson opts not to run for a second term and, the winner at the convention is Governor George Wallace. The convention is even nastier than OTL.

tickets are Nixon/Rockefeller and Wallace/Gore Sr.

Go go!

Richard Nixon would still win but it would be a super narrow margin. Virginia would be the deciding state.

Oklahoma: Wallace took 20.33% of the vote as a third-party candidate that year. Combined with the 32% that voted Democratic anyway, I think that would be enough to swing OK.

Maryland: Maryland voted Democratic that year anyway. Four years later, in 1972, George Wallace still won the Democratic primary there. If anything Wallace probably would have improved on Humphrey's margin.

DC: Going to vote Dem matter how illogical it is...

But do really think that almost every Humphrey vote would go for Wallace? For example Nixon got 48% of the vote in Oklahoma. I can't see Wallace taking all those votes - same goes for MD.

Oklahoma was a tossup in my opinion, but considering the sort of Democrats there were in Oklahoma at that time, I think Wallace would have done better than Humphrey, not worse. Those people had to be pretty loyal Democrats to have voted Humphrey that year anyway.

Maryland was still very much a Dixie state at that time, so I'm pretty confident on that one. Humphrey won the state, so certainly so would Wallace.

Nixon wins.

I'd write in Gene McCarthy.

Seems about right. I think most of Humphrey's voters (especially liberals) would vote for Nixon considering that Wallace would be too racist for them.

Turnout was already a problem for HHH. Liberals would just stay home and I wouldn't be shocked if McCarthy ran as a 3rd Party. The suburbs would flood to Nixon.

In my opinion, Wallace was too racist to win PA and possibly TX, MD, and FL. I agree with you that Nixon would easily win.

Uh, there were plenty of racist voters in TX, MD, and FL in 1968.

I know that--that's why I said possibly. I'm not sure they would have been enough racists in those states to guarantee them for Wallace. So you agree with me about PA going to Nixon, though? PA voted for Humphrey in RL in 1968, and Humphrey was very pro-civil rights and affirmative action.
