"Some little known member of Congress" may actually be the most likely answer.  Someone like the equivalent of Duncan Hunter from the 2008 cycle.  But out of these specific names, I guess I'd go with Santorum, though Johnson and Romney are also possibilities.  (Romney won't announce until after the Nov. midterms though, whereas there's a chance that Johnson or Santorum could go even before that.)

Pawlenty probably won't announce until after his term as MN gov runs out in January.  Huckabee probably won't run at all, following the clemency thing.  Gingrich and Palin.....I wouldn't bet on either of them running, but if they do, they'll stretch out the decision well into the summer of 2011.

Barbour is another possible 2012er, but I don't think he'd announce first.  Sitting governors are never the first to announce, as they have a day job to worry about.  ("Little known member of Congress" isn't really enough of a day job to count.)

I think if Gingrich is serios this time...same with Palin...it will be the end of spring. Not as late anymore.

Gingrich you may be right on.  Palin.....if she does run, I suspect she'll want to delay the messy work of campaigning, debating, etc. as long as possible.  She doesn't really play by the same media rules as the others.  She doesn't have to worry about the media losing interest in her if she teases them too long.

I'll go with a random House member or a former Governor not currently holding office.  My guess would be that such a candidate would really be running for Vice-President or a cabinet job.  Such a person might hope lightning would strike and they would capture the national imagination.  But failing that, angling for a number two post or a higher profile job in a GOP administration has a certain logic to it.
