Democrats still seem not to get what's going on.

Republicans don't either, of course (at least not what I see), but Scott Brown is benefitting from Democrats in this particular situation.

Just IMO.

So what exactly is going on, wise one?

Well they came off the ganja break and brown won Lowell 52-47.

That's amazing in a traditional old mill city.

Yes, cinyc, thank you for the turnout charts.   It could have rendered all the swing stuff useless if this election would have been closer.  Did you make it beforehand?  In any case, awesome.

88% in:

Here's county data - it's too large to include the totals - but they should be the same:

I've posted the special election result here - with county map (unofficial with updates forthcoming).  I don't think Middlesex will hold for Brown as Cambridge and Somerville still have a lot of precincts to report.

Huge turnout for a single race on a snowy January day here.

We'll see. There's a few more things that still have to play out.

I am pissed. Why couldn't Lowell have done that in the 2007 special election for MA-05. Jim Ogonoski would have won. Angry

(ah, I see, Meeker already beat me)

I am being serious though - Dems have misunderstood what 2008 actually meant.

I worked on the spreadsheets off and on over the weekend, integrating the Mass PVI data, some Census data and historic data in the same place.  I put the charts together from the data this afternoon.

It should have worked from the beginning - but I missed that the Globe thinks you spell Aquinnah with a G, so the numbers weren't right initially - until about 50%, when I noticed that Brown was supposedly winning Franklin County (yeah, right!) and fixed the issue.

I'm still going to double-check everything actually works when the data stops trickling in.

Why hasn't Cambridge reported more than 3% yet?

Boston was 81% in, so it is possible that Brown will drop below 5%.  I'm still stunned.

Worchester Coakley 52, Brown 47

Collapse in working-class Mass is something to behold really.

That's amazing in a traditional old mill city.

The pvi was only plus one Dem, so it is a marginal town in a close election. It translates into about a a 7% Brown margin. Most of Cambridge by the way is still out, so I am not sure Brown will manage a 7% margin. It is 5% now, and might stay that way, or drop to maybe 4% depending on what else is still out.

Massive fail by the Democrats. The Democrats are all concerned about electability, never do a damn thing for their base, have tons of moderate heroes and right-wing Blue Dogs, and the Republicans just got a teabagger elected to Massachusetts.
