Judging by the county results and the issues of each election, I'd imagine 1988.

I'd agree its was 1988 if you're including suburbs under "urban". But the way I read the question was urban areas excluding suburbs, so I'd say 1956.

Eisenhower won Cook County, Cuyahoga, Allegany, Queens, King, Multnomah, Hennepin, even San Francisco.

it depends a lot on how you define "urban," but probably 1956.

It depends upon your definition of "urban," but probably 1972!

Nixon received a significantly higher percentage of the vote that year than Eisenhower did in 1956, and the urban non-white vote was considerably smaller in 1956 than in 1972.

It was also considerably more Republican. Then again, the urban Black vote was considerably more Republican in 1956.

Still: Depending on definition, any of the dates mentioned, 1928, and 1924 are possible contenders.

1972 most likely.

I think 1980.  There were sections of Phila that Reagan won solidly.  Even Ridge probably won the white vote in Phila in 1994, barely.

I'm guessing the last time the GOP won the urban (not suburban) white vote was either in 1972 or 1980.

Since there were all of five white people living in cities at the time, I don't find that hard to imagine.

Surprised nobody's mentioned old man Reagan's 84 landslide.

Because Mondale won a lot more urban counties than McGovern or Stevenson did.

Reagan soundly won Los Angeles but lost San Francisco in 80 and 84.

But Mondale was more recent that McGovern and Stevenson. He couldn't even break 60% in uber-Dem places with large black populations like Wayne, MI; Cuyahoga, OH; Cook, IL. No way he won the white vote.

Maybe Nixon did win the urban white vote in '72. But Mondale did much better than McGovern in urban areas, so I don't think '84 was the last time. Its hard to tell with a lot counties because they have a large inner-suburb population, which until the 90's were strongly GOP.
