Assume that in this scenario Taft survives past 1932. The Republicans decide to nominate Taft in 1932 since they feel Hoover can't win. Despite Taft's advanced age, the Republicans believe that many people still have fond memories of his Presidency (when the economy was good). Also, Al Smith is the Demoratic nominee in 1932 instead of FDR. Everything else stays the same (Hoover is still President from 1929-1933, the Great Depression still occurs under his watch, etc.). How would this election turn out? I'm thinking Smith will narrowly win. Discuss, with maps.

Taft would be extremely old and politically irrelevant, this is almost as ludicrous a decision as nominating Wilkie.

Taft will get much more votes than that due to anti-Catholicism and his good reputation. Also, Taft will get even more votes if he picks a good VP, as people would then stop fearing something bad happening if he died.

No, Xuande's map is correct. W.H. Taft would be irrelevant.

The guy would be in his 70's or so I would believe, and he got trounced in 1912. Al Smith could probably organize the New Deal coalition much like Roosevelt did. The only area in play would be mostly New England, where plenty of people are Catholic, Democratic, and hard hit by the depression.

He wouldn't accept the nomination, after all, he loathed the Presidency. Not to mention, he wouldn't have made a difference to the campaign if he were somehow nominated. He was not only political irrelevant by 1932 but was a hapless campaigner, remember 1912? So, with that logic, Smith wins.

Also: please, for the love of God, stop. At least cut it down even further.
