Gerald Ford narrowly defeats Jimmy Carter in 1976. Since Ford does not cut off aid to the Iranian Shah, there is no Iranian Revolution during Ford's second term. Thus there is no oil shock, no 1980 recession, and no hostage crisis. In November 1980, the unemployment rate is 5.5% but the inflation rate is 9.6%. The Republicans nominate VP Bob Dole while Democrats nominate New York Governor Hugh Carey. You pick the VPs. How would this election turn out? Discuss, with maps.

Dole Chooses George HW Bush, Carey chooses Gary Hart.

I think Dole will blow him out:

Dole: 396
Carey: 142

I agree with NiK and say Carey would win due to the high inflation rate and due to voter fatigue after having Republicans control the White House for 12 straight years. Also, Dole wasn't a very charismatic guy, which wouldn't help him win over many voters upset about the high inflation rate.
