You should have mentioned the guy was mentally ill and tricked into trying to move heroin into mainland China.  It would help if the fellow's name was a little more English.  Even a Welsh name would help.

Dead0man had the same reaction I did.  If this guy's name is Alan Smith, the story would have been followed differently.  Also Drug mule stories dont really illicit sympathy unless you are a moderately attractive Aussie.

Who knows. That may even have been my point. The media here only picked up on this story about a week ago. This guy, a British citizen, had been sentenced to death under pretty dubious circumstances* a few years ago.

*That's even ignoring the always-dodgy practice of executing non-citizens and the mental health issues. Apparently the trial lasted half an hour and no interpretation was provided.

I believe I read the PRC didn't tell ANYBODY he was going to die until just the last few months.  The dude himself didn't even know until a day before it happened.

Probably, yeah. But it was known before the media picked up on it, suddenly, over the past week or so.

This is part of why the US should abolish the death penalty. It's going to look ridiculously hypocritical if an American citizen ends up in this type of situation and the US argues against it.

Arguing against the death penalty of a mentally ill person that was tricked into trafficking drugs makes one a hypocrite when they argue that a serial killer should get it?
