I assume Perry goes over better with the hardcore conservative base, but Hutchison would probably attract more Independent support and is more popular in the state as a whole. However, the hardcore conservative base is probably more important to the GOP now with the growing Hispanic population.

Do you mean better as in who has the better chance of winning or who we would prefer as governor?

Who has the better chance of winning. Obviously the Republican candidate is favored under most circumstances, but regardless.

Hutchinson. Perry vs White I would consider a toss up, Hutchinson vs White would favor Hutchinson.

I would say Hutchison but I admittedly don't know a lot about Texas.

Is there any chance we'll have significant third party candidates like in 2006? That could certainly complicate things.

Kinky Friedman is running for Agriculture Commissioner (as a Democrat) and Carole Keeton Rylander Strayhorn Jingleheimer Schmidt has disappeared from public view.

The only reason White switched races was because he doesn't think Hutchison will win the primary

And Cornyn talked him into it. Hutchinson can still win, she's began a large add campaing in the Houston area recently and is popular in this area.

It would be funny if the primary was so close it went to a runoff. There are a few fringe candidates (like perennial nutbag Larry Kilgore) that could siphon off enough votes for it to be possible.

Im praying Kilgore will siphon off enough perry votes to block him from a third term.

Carole of the many names ran for mayor of Austin last May and finished 3rd.

If Bush had been able to match Hutchison's margin of victory in 2000, he would have won the nationwide popular vote.  End of story.

Apparently, I spoke too soon. Carole etc. is thinking of running for Comptroller... as a Democrat.

KBH is Safe R in the General, with Perry the seat is Lean R.  Honestly, though, if I were a Republican I wouldn't be too worried about the General Election aspect.  White could realistically beat Perry, but it'd still be quite an upset.

Uh, Hutchinson (obvious answer).  Bill White can't beat her.

Bill White can beat Perry, but don't consider him a favorite - lean R is probably the correct call in that case.

Kay Bailey Hutchison seems to be somewhat sane.
