would have performed best against Roosevelt? (you may make a map for any election cycle, but 1936 would be most interesting.)

Robert A. Taft would have been the only Republican to offer any sort of appealing alternative to the aggression and fascism and FDR, and thus at least be able to make a splash.

Nominating milquetoast losers like Wilkie, Landon, Dewey guaranteed an FDR landslide each time.

I'll post a map a bit later.

Bob LaFollette, Jr. may have been able to out-flank him from the Left.

I doubt very serious Taft could have beaten FDR. He certainly would have done better than Dewey in '48, however, as he opposed Truman's nationalization of the steel industry, whose main purpose it was to break the unions.

1948 was definitely a lost opportunity. War criminal Truman should have been swept out of office in a landslide.

If Landon had actually bothered to campaign in '36 and not only left his criticisms of the Roosevelt Administration to the RNC alone, then he would have done better than his hapless performance of 8 votes in the electoral college. Due to his acceptance of most aspects of the New Deal, with the exception of its hostilities towards business, he would have most likely performed in similar fashion to Willkie in 1940.

I always feel sorry for Landon

I concur. Landon wouldn't have been a bad President at all. He was my type of Republican.
