Lief Does Something!
December 9 2009

In a shocking announcement, President Lief (JCP-VT) announced that he has nominated Associate Justice Sam Spade (ARC-TX) to be elevated to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, replacing retiring and long-serving Chief Justice bullmoose88 (JCP-PA). Even more astonishing was the President’s rather bold pick for Associate Justice, controversial Senator and PPT Marokai Blue (JCP-AZ), a former Attorney General under President bgwah. Many Atlasians were expecting Senator Franzl (DA-IL) to be President Lief’s first choice. Franzl immediately expressed support for Marokai Blue’s nomination. Far-right populist and unpopular former Senator MasterJedi (PCP-IA) was less than cordial; Senate candidate Vepres (essentially PCP-CO), also of the far-right, was quick to dismiss Marokai’s maturity level. Overall reception was, however, positive, and this paper would like to express support for Marokai Blue’s speedy confirmation.

Bitter Battle in the Southeast!
December 9 2009

The Southeast's December Gubernatorial election is taking off, with incumbent Governor Xahar, a member of the Leipist National Front, facing Lieutenant Governor (and previously Acting Governor) Brandon H (PCP-LA). Governor Xahar won a decisive victory over the previous incumbent, former Governor Daniel Adams (PCP-FL), in October. Daniel Adams, often criticized for his inactivity and incompetence, has not been heard from much since. The October election was intriguing in that Xahar's eligibility to hold elected office was unclear at the time. Lieutenant Governor-elect Brandon H took a role as Acting Governor until the Supreme Court settled the dispute in favor of Governor Xahar.

The most interesting dynamic of the October race was Xahar's long-time role as an adversary to the Progressive Conservative Party. The party's secret, private forum (where their corrupt backroom deals are discussed), owned by Lt. Governor Brandon H himself, is actually titled "Xahar is a Bastard." Many members of the Progressive Conservative Party are still upset at Xahar for illegally accessing their forum of hatred.

Governor Xahar was previously a perennial loser. He had lost many elections in the Pacific, including a loss to NOTA in a special election. He was often noted as causing the poor performance of Supersoulty when Xahar was Supersoulty's running mate. The Southeast was previously a stronghold of the Progressive Conservative Party. They were once able to elect even the most trollish of posters to serve as Governor, including a member who advocated rape! The defeat of the Progressive Conservative Party in their former stronghold, by one of their main adversaries, and by a party they often deride as a "joke party", certainly has to hurt their large egos.

The PCP's de-facto leader, downwithdaleft, has taken an arrogant approach to the race, claiming he alone can elect anyone he wants as Governor. HP finds that ironic, given the partisan affiliation of the current Governor. HP's analysis concludes that this race will likely be close and will be decided on turn out more than any other factor. The Southeast gubernatorial race is considered a TOSS-UP.

Northeast Assembly December Predictions!
December 2009

Seat One: Alexander Hamilton (ARC-MA)

Hamilton Paper predicts that Alexander Hamilton will once again win the first seat in the upcoming Northeast Assembly elections. Representative Hamilton's reputation as a pragmatic centrist has proven to earn him votes from moderates, conservatives, libertarians, and progressives alike.

Seat Two: Antonio V (JCP-VT)

Hamilton Paper predicts relatively popular Representative Antonio V to win re-election to the second Assembly seat. Antonio V has been the leading voice of social democracy within the Assembly and has worked with moderates to produce progressive reforms.

Seat Three: Doctor Cynic (LNF-PA)

Former President Doctor Cynic staged an unexpected write-in campaign at the last minute in October and squeaked his way into the Assembly. During his time in the Assembly, he has remained active and earned the respect of the region. Hamilton Paper predicts Doctor Cynic to win the third seat.

Seat Four: Libertas (ARC-NY)

Challenger Libertas entered the race amidst slight controversy, however, regional demographics show that Libertas has a strong base within the region and Hamilton Paper predicts Libertas to win the 4th seat quite capably.

Seat Five: NewDealDemocrat (JCP-PA)

Challenger NewDealDemocrat, a socially conservative JCP member, has earned endorsements from Senator North Carolina Yankee, SoEA HappyWarrior, and Speaker Smid. His unexpected cross-party support causes us to believe that NewDealDemocrat will have no trouble at all capturing the fifth seat.

Seat Six: fezzyfestoon (PCP-NJ)

Incumbent fezzyfestoon staged a last minute write-in campaign in October and performed surprisingly well. He has portrayed himself as a liberal Progressive Conservative Party member and should be able to win the sixth seat despite the PCP's lack of support in the Northeast.

Seat Seven: cinyc (I-NY)

Incumbent cinyc has been a strong conservative voice in the Assembly. He has been hard-working and productive. His merits alone will earn him the seventh spot, as he lacks a party and the region is generally hostile to conservatives.

Seat Eight: Winston Disraeli (PCP-NH)

Appointed Representative Winston Disraeli, a former ARC member, is in trouble for re-election. He made the mistake of switching to a very unpopular party in a region it lacks a base in. Nonetheless, Hamilton Paper expects Winston to eke out a narrow victory over Sewer Socialist to win the eighth seat.

Seems pretty accurate, except that I'd switch Libertas and Disraeli.

Seems pretty accurate, except that I'd switch Libertas and Disraeli.

Disraeli's basic problem is that he lost the ARC vote, which Libertas will likely receive due to his affiliation. I could see switching NewDealDem and Libertas, though.

Shocking Senate Shake-Up!
December 9 2009

Senator Marokai Blue (JCP-AZ) has dropped out of the December Senate race following his nomination to the Supreme Court by President Lief (JCP-VT). The move caused a bit of chaos as the Jesus Christ Party scrambled to find a replacement candidate during the convention. Lacking confidence in the ability to stage a successful write-in campaign, JCP members turned to Senate candidate Barnes (DA-RI) for their second preference endorsement.

In another shocking twist, Senator Franzl (DA-IL) has chosen not to seek re-election in December. This move significantly increases the chances of Senator afleitch (DA-WI). The decision was met with widespread disappointment and due to time constraints, Franzl's name will still appear on the official ballot.

Senator Fritz (JCP-MN) had previously announced his decision not to seek re-election and former Senator Rowan Brandon (PCP-NJ) previously resigned upon his appointment as Northeast CJO.

These events have caused a wholly different electoral environment that August, which witnessed the re-election of all four incumbents. Senator afleitch will be the only at-large incumbent serving in the next session assuming he is re-elected.

December Gubernatorial Endorsements
December 2009

Southeast: Hamilton Paper endorses Governor Xahar in his bid for re-election. The paper recognizes that Xahar's first term was hindered by legal problems and believes that his intellectual leadership is what the Southeast needs to get back on track. Hamilton Paper endorses Deldem (JCP-TX) for the position of Lieutenant Governor.

Pacific: Hamilton Paper endorses None of the Above in this race. Governor Meeker has been fairly inactive and often late in opening voting booths. The Pacific legislature has been inactive for most of the term. For Lieutenant Governor, Hamilton Paper again endorses None of the Above, due to incumbent Ebowed's lack of productivity. Unless the Pacific rids itself of Meeker and Ebowed, it will begin to look like the Southeast under former Governor Daniel Adams.

Midwest: Hamilton Paper endorses Mechaman (ARC-MT) in his bid for the Midwest Governorship. Mechaman has been an active participant in Atlasia and is known for his drama-free attitude and sense of humor. Hamilton Paper believes that Mechaman can bring a new atmosphere to the Midwest and create new activity within the region. Incumbent Vepres has recently slipped out of his Moderate Hero disguise and undergone a mental break down. We do not see Vepres being an acceptable candidate until he is able to get back in to shape.

Pandering Senate Candidate Loses Way
December 9 2009

Earlier this week, Senate hopeful and Midwest Governor Vepres (essentially PCP-CO) witnessed his unlikely campaign implode from within. After months of sugarcoating his views in an awful display of Moderate Heroism, far-right Vepres unleashed upon Atlasia the real Vepres. The real Vepres made it clear he has no concerns for the plight of the unfortunate, that it is simply their fault for "not taking personal responsibility." Vepres, recognizing the disgust with real Vepres, attempted to half-heartedly apologize and tried to assess campaign damage. It is the opinion of Hamilton Paper that the damage is irreversible, unless you think George Allen is still going to make it big in Virginia.

Hamilton Paper has received information that Vepres is again reverting to Moderate Heroism and taking definitively anti-libertarian positions. The attacks on so-called "moderates" and his attempts to appear anti-libertarian contrast with his stated self-identification as a moderate libertarian! Vote smart. Vote against Vepres.

Interview with Northeast Representative Winston Disraeli
December 9 2009

Northeast Representative Winston Disraeli (PCP-NH), interviewed by Alexander Hamilton

*Upon your appointment to the Northeast Assembly, you were a fierce critic of the Progressive Conservative Party. Not so much later, you joined their ranks. Do you feel at home in the Progresive Conservative Party?*

Winston Disraeli: While they're not the ideal movement for my strong individualism and libertarianism, I feel that they are the best way to spread liberty from within the system. Ultimately, the party needs to be given new direction.

*Do you believe that North Carolina Yankee's leadership has been any different from downwithdaleft's?*

Winston Disraeli: Really, I'd say it's too early to say, but I don't see much change in the near future for the party. I'm hoping the burgeoning socially liberal movement in the party will grow, and we could have a more pragmatic platform in the future. It would also be nice if we could find a different link other than regionalism.

*What do you plan to do in the Northeast Assembly if re-elected?*

Winston Disraeli: I will introduce legislation to remove the state from marriage and sex laws. I will also draw up other legislation, though it's not like the regions have much power unfortunately due to the obsessive centralisation of government the Jesus Christ Party wants.

*President Lief has recently appointed Senator Marokai Blue, a rival of yours, to the Supreme Court. Do you have an opinion on this appointment?*

Winston Disraeli: Generally quite negative. As far as I can see, Senator Marokai Blue has authored legislation in many cases which have been extremely anti-individual. That said, I do agree with some legislation he has passed, such as the Bow Chicka Bow Wow Bill, for example.

*In February the Northeast Assembly will likely be reduced to six seats. Which of the five candidates in this election would you most want to serve with, if you had to choose?*

Winston Disraeli: Ideally, Hamilton, Libertas, fezzyfestoon, cinyc and Doctor Cynic.

*Do you have any interest in seeking higher office in the near future (up to six months)?*

Winston Disraeli: If I win re-election to the Northeast Assembly, I might consider running for Senate, for what it's worth. Beyond that, I have no other aspirations.

*Who are you giving your first preference to in the upcoming at-large Senate election, and which five candidates would you most like to see victorious?*

Winston Disraeli: I shall be giving my first preference to Mint. I would also like to see Al, Vepres, afleitch and DWTL win, out of those running for Senate.

Hamilton Paper thanks Representative Winston Disraeli for his time.

BREAKING: Fritz In!

Hamilton Paper has learned that incumbent Senator Fritz (JCP-MN) will run a write-in campaign for another term in the Senate. Fritz explained this decision as the result of Marokai Blue's nomination to the Supreme Court and a need for another JCP candidate.

Progressive Conservative Party In Panic Mode!
December 9 2009

With popular moderates fleeing the party in droves, Atlasia's least popular party has taken yet another blow to it's reputation (or lack there of). Constant attacks from downwithdaleft (PCP-AL) directed towards Senator Tmthforu94 (DA-IN) and Secretary of Internal Affairs NiK (DA-MI) have drove them from the party, contrary to PCP Chariman North Carolina Yankee's claimed "reform." North Carolina Yankee is quoted as saying "It's pretty clear that the RPP is very close to being finished, if it isn't already." Though downwithdaleft has claimed that "Next week's elections will show that the RPP is strong and here to stay," Hamilton Paper disagrees and believes that December 2009 will once again show that the Progressive Conservative Party is a complete and utter failure.

The Progressive Conservative Party overlords could not be reached for comment.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SENATOR TMTHFORU94!
December 9 2009

*You recently left the Progressive Conservative Party to become an Independent. Today, you joined the Democratic Alliance. What was the motive behind these switches, and what would you like Atlasia and the Mideast specifically to know about this switch?*

Tmthforu94: Well, first of all, thank you for agreeing to interview me, Hamilton. My reasoning for leaving the Progressive Conservative Party is simple: I was unhappy there. The leadership completely rejected me, and I have been harassed by several members of the party. I'm at a stressful point in my life, and the last thing I need is more stress from my party. Today, I joined the Democratic Alliance, because I believe in their message more than I believe in any other party's message. The Democratic Alliance has always been a friendly party that has been nice to me, something the PCP cannot say. I hope my constituents are content with my switch. I can guarentee to everyone now, my politics will not change now that I am in the DA. I will vote exactly how I would if I was in the PCP, LNF, or JCP.

*You won a landslide re-election in October, proving that the Mideast approves of your representation of them. However, you have indicated an unwillingness to run for re-election. Do you mind explaining the statements you made regarding re-election in February?*

Tmthforu94: Well, as I have stated, my decision in regards to February is not final. I could still decide to run for re-election. I've also had my eye on the Governor's mansion. I thank the Mideast for showing confidence in me during the October Presidential Elections. It was a great feeling. My main reasons for stepping down are personal reasons. I have been extremely stressed out in school recently. Last week, there was a huge split in my church, and I have been defending myself and my family. I also will most likely be playing basketball this winter. Overall, I'm in a hectic time, and February through June will be hectic, though probably not as much. Closer to February, I'll make a final decision. But in no way will I be done with Atlasia.

*That is very good to hear, Senator. As a Senator, you have been able to gain support from a wide and ecletic group of voters including Franzl, opebo, officepark, and Al. What is your strategy in maintaining such a broad and far-reaching coalition?*

Tmthforu94: I will continue to work together with my fellow Senators to do what is best for Atlasia. I will continue to vote how I think will be best for the Mideast region, and it's citizens. That's what I did during my first term, and it got me re-elected, and that is what I'll continue to do.

*What are your thoughts on the current party system and the five major parties of Atlasia?*

Tmthforu94: Well, from the way I see it, the left is stronger than ever, and is dominating in national elections. The right is certainly struggling, partly because of the failed leadership in the PCP. Senator Yankee has been making an effort to get the right back together, but other members are too stubborn to let that happen, since they would have to bend. The center seems to be growing stronger, with many moderates in the PCP bolting for the more peaceful and friendly Democratic Alliance. Over the past few months, I've seen that populists, which were mainly in the PCP/RPP before, are now mostly in the Democratic Alliance. I think the right's unwillingness to work with some populists, which siding with libertarians, has caused this.

Democratic Alliance - A party full of nice people, who aren't nearly as agressive as other major parties. A little more liberal than I prefer, but still the best fit.

Progressive Conservative Party - It used to be a fine party, but has really fallen in the past few months. DownWithTheLeft's aggressive strategy clearly hasn't worked. Look how the party has done in federal elections recently. The only region the party was having success in was the Mideast, and that was mainly because I was chairman for a while. The party can get back on the right track, but I don't see it happening as long as DWTL has a major say.

Leipist National Front - A party full of nice and funny people. Although it is a very liberal party, the members are extremely easy to get along with.

Jesus Christ Party - It isn't my favorite party, mainly because of it's politics. But there are several members in the party that I am friends with, and I have a rather positive opinion of the party. They just need to get a bit more conservative.

Atlasia Reform Coalition - I'm suprised at how quickly this party has grown, and it is on pace to become a major playmaker in elections. The party has so many different political ideologies though. I'm not sure how long the party will last without a split due to political reasons.

*Will you vote to confirm Sam Spade and Marokai Blue, and why or why not?*

Tmthforu94: I will vote to confirm Sam Spade. I think he has already done an excellent job, and I hope he will continue to do one. As to Marokai, I'm quite undecided. You will have to wait a while to get a decision from me, since my vote is completely up in the air.

*Who do you support in the upcoming gubernatorial elections?*

Tmthforu94: Southeast - I support Brandon H for Governor. I think both of them will be fine choices, and both are a step up from what the Southeast used to have. The biggest winner in this race will be the Southeast.

Pacific - The regional government is extremely disappointing. I feel like both the Governor and Lt. Governor have been extremely inactive. I would vote None of the Above.

Midwest - I support Vepres. I think he has made the region a much more active region, and a lot has been accomplished in his first term.

*Do you ever think Atlasia can reach a point where we can put aside partisanship and cronyism and vote based on platforms and political beliefs?*

Tmthforu94: No, I honestly do not. I disagree with the statements that a conservative will never be elected again. I think what people vote of mostly is which party the candidate is in and how they act. Political views play a role, but it isn't as significent as it probably should be.

*Will the right-wing ever be able to recover from downwithdaleft's stain, and if so, how do you think a reconciliation with other center-right members could come about?*

Tmthforu94: I think it is possible for the right to recover, and it will take a lot more than removing DWTL from the picture. I think potentially a few members could be drawn back.

*Do you approve of President Lief?*

Tmthforu94: I don't think he's been terrible. I mainly don't approve of him because of his political views. It would be nice for him to get more active and engage in debates, because I'm sure a lot of people, including myself, would like to hear his opinion.

*There have been many whispers of a possible Bacon King candidacy in February. Looking ahead, do you think you could support a Bacon King ticket?*

Tmthforu94: I would have to wait and see who all is running for President. But yes, I would entertain the idea of voting for Bacon King. I have a positive opinion of him, and he really impressed me when he filled in as PPT. But who knows? Maybe I'll even run. Tongue

*Be honest- would you ever consider returning to the Progressive Conservative Party?*

Tmthforu94: Well, there would have to be a lot of changes in the party. I don't see myself returning though, as long as DownWithTheLeft is still there.

*Do you have anything to say about Ogis' recent attempt to return and Democratic Alliance attempts to defend him? You were fairly close with Persepolis, as I understand.*

Tmthforu94: I liked Persepolis, and I will happily admit that. He was very nice to me, and I liked that account's politics. To be honest with you, I haven't been too involved in the politics part of Atlasia recently, so it's hard for me to comment on his attempt to return and how the Democratic Alliance responded.

*What is your opinion of SoFA EarlAW and if replaced, who would make a good replacement?*
Tmthforu94: I don't think EarlAW has done a good job as SoFA. The voter roll is rarely updated, and he never seems to be around. As for a replacement, Teddy has expressed interest in the position. I would also entertain the idea of SoFA Tmthforu94. I've always liked the position, and I would consider accepting it if it was ever offered to me.

*I'd like to ask you compliment one Atlasian and criticize another.*

Tmthforu94: I will throw a compliment to Franzl. He's done a great job as Senator, and he will be missed next session. I am extremely disappointed in how DWTL has somehow managed to ruin the PCP all on his own. The way he has been acting is annoying and childish, and I hope the chairman Yankee will take action on it.

*As a final question, what do you plan to do with the remainder of your Senate term?*

Tmthforu94: I will try and get back into the groove of things, and I should be back to my normal self in January, which is when I expect the Senate to pick up again. I'd like to introduce some more legislation that would protect citizens of Atlasia, bills that would keep Atlasians at home, and not in hospitals. If we are going to have universal health care, the government should be doing it's best to protect it's citizens.

*Thank you, Senator.*

Tmthforu94: Thank you, Hamilton.
