He helped design race-baiting ads as a Democrat in the 1950s and defended the KKK as a journalist in the 1970s. The funny thing is, "moderate hero" htmldon would have proudly voted for him every time he ran on the GOP ticket.

I met and talked with him for a little bit before he died and he seemed like a sweet old guy. My family voted for him with regularity. Of course that doesn't make up for his appalling beliefs...

I knew people who had met him in person when he was a Senator. They said he was reasonably nice. But I still knew of cases where he wasn't nice in person. Definitely an HP.

As much as I have questions about affirmative action, I have to agree.  His open support of Latin American dictators was absolutely frightening as well.

The only thing to respect about the man was he never cared about what was popular.  One thing with Helms is he never won an overwhelming majority in any race he ran.

Pretty literally. I'm sort of surprised no one's brought up the whole Ryan White bill, it takes something else to oppose AIDS funding because people brought their disease 'on themselves' after a 9 year old dies from it.
