Given the sort of rhetoric we are at the moment being given by certain parts on this forum I think this would be an opportune time to quote a good piece by the Historian Fernand Braudel (From The Perspective Of The World: Civilization & Capitalism 15th-18th Century: Volume III) on the relationship between these two entities which are supposedly in opposition to each other - I don't agree with all of it (I don't like the language in the first paragraph for a start..)but I think it is good piece none the less:
