^This.  He was tone deaf and pretty much neglected the white ethnic working class. His policies caused further white flight and the disintegration of long standing neighborhoods from which it took the city decades to recover.

John Lindsay was pretty much one of the worst NYC mayors ever - agree with patrick1 on his points.

I'll add:  He did nothing to circumvent the city's slide into fiscal oblivion and near-bankruptcy and his inability to handle the teachers' unions pretty much destroyed the schools for a generation.  Frankyl, he couldn't handle any union issue and basically alienated them altogether.
