As similarly skeptical of the choice as many others here are, he has done a great deal to bring people together, heal and improve relations, reach out to supposed enemies, and otherwise improve our reliance on diplomatic relations substantially.

Granted, he hasn't cured cancer or something, and still maintains military force inside Iraq and Afghanistan, but these are (largely) more low key than before.

There are rationales for it. If anyone can give me some other suitable candidates for the position I'm willing to change my mind.

Too early. This is, actually, ridiculous enough at this point to hurt him. And it, definitely, hurts the prize.

They should have waited to see if he actually does smthg to justify it. With full due respect, giving the prize for not being George Bush is setting the bar a bit low. I just hope he now lives up to it.

My money was on the Cluster Munitions Coalition.  Among other things, they got 100 countries to sign a treaty last year in Oslo banning cluster bombs, as well has actively removed cluster bombs and landmines from war-torn regions.  Of the 205 nominees, they were the only ones that I felt actually did something to bring peace to people on the international arena.

I echo what others have said.  I understand the logic, but it's a little premature.

Nominations had to be submitted by Feb. 1, that means the longest he could have been in office when nominated was 11 days(though I'm sure he was nominated sooner). And you guys only call that a "little premature"?

From the Nobel Peace Center website:

"King Obama?"  Not very subtle if you ask me.

Well come on, it can't be ignored that Obama instantly improved the US' international standing.  There are drastically lower levels of animosity and tension between our country and the rest of the world.  Like they said, that doesn't happen every day.

My Swedish is not the best, but I think it says "from King to Obama". The bottomline of that article is that MLK made Obama's presidency possible.

He won it for not being Bush, just like he won the presidency for not having an "R" next to his name.

And "Fra King til Obama" is a exhibition at the Nobel Peace Center, open from September 24 to April 11.
