Still never beat this

Harding - 63.97%
Cox      - 32.78%

Um...1968?

Humphrey - 64.03%
Nixon - 31.78%
Wallace - 4.07%

or 1964?

Johnson - 80.87%
Goldwater - 19.13%

(That '68 result was pretty impressive, btw)

Heck, that Harding result wasn't even the most Republican RI has been.

I guess that's why prostitution has been legalized and there are strip clubs galore, people have nothing better to do than score some poon.

Yes, I am aware of this, however, the point I was making is that as a percentage of the popular vote in Rhode Island Obama never beat Harding.

1920 is the most recent election in which the Republican scored higher than Obama.  I am not pleased to say that, however, those are the facts.

It was his best state, and the only one where he got eighty percent or higher.

What is the point of saying this? Some Republican beat Obama a long time ago, so..?

Someone started throwing numbers around in this thread so I simply added some other numbers to add to this scintillating discussion.

Rhode Island has legal prostitution?  Hmmm, my negative opinion of the place might need to be revisited.  Tongue

Legal prostitution and strip clubs galore. Big time Freedom State.

But it is packed with Catholics BRTD.  They might burn you at the stake in the middle of the night. Smiley

For now at least. The most well known and visible forms of prostitution are still illegal though. But "escort services" and classified ad call girls aren't violating any law.

Prostitution is legal, but brothels are not.

And from what I hear they don't even really enforce that. Providence is full of Asian "massage parlors". Sounds like Minneapolis, where there's a well known massage parlor/brothel within walking distance from the main police state that's been open for well over a decade. I suppose cops prefer visits there to donut breaks unsurprisingly.

Good state, but its leadership makes me ill. I can only blame the voters.

Disclaimer: PA-13/Philly comparison

BRTD-  You sure?  Politically speaking it's VERY similar to Northeast Philadelphia:

- Lots of ethnic Catholics (especially Irish) and Jews.

- Votes about low 60s D-high 30s GOP for Pres

- Usually votes for Democratic Congresspeople and US Senators, but not by an overwhelming margin unless they have long term incumbency.  Had some GOP leanings in the past, especially during the 1980s.

- For some reason likes to elect socially conservative, pro-life, yet pro-labor State Reps. due to a sizable, vocal minority influenced by the Catholic Church and local pols seem to be afraid to go against them.

Amazingly though Northeast Philly has a decent number of strip clubs, a lot of hookers operate out of our fine hotels Tongue, and a lot of Craig's List "Escort" busts originate here.

Will I bait Keystone Phil into returning? Tongue

One of the better states, though its combination of "moderate" Republicans and narrow-minded old Catholic Democrats is kind of annoying.

Every NE Philly Republican State Rep is labor endorsed, but follows the Catholic Church to the letter on choice AND birth control plus 2 of the Dems oppose choice only.  For some reason we elected Obama despite the race issue (H. Clinton would have won by an extra 15+ points here) and we send a woman who operated an abortion clinic to Congress.  I've never been able to figure that one out other than PA's wonderful gerrymandering (why we CAN NOT elect Corbett next year) where they pack all the liberal Democrats into 2 districts and make the rest of them GOP/Conservative Dem leaning.  I don't know what the deal is with Rhode Island, but that would be my guess.

Prostitution in Rhode Island is legal only as long as it's completely done in private. So streetwalking and brothels are still illegal, but independent providers off Craigslist and the like are legal.

Flyers: The thread is about RI, not Philadelphia.

Still RI is a very Irish Catholic state.  Didn't think that was your cup of tea.

It's quite obvious from their laws and culture that no one cares one iota about the Church there anyway.

Dull authoritarian sh**thole. Ranked third least free state in the nation.

Obviously horrible state.
