The world population is slowly becoming a problem. People no longer can live happy lives. There are just far too many people on the planet. Hitler may be a murderer, but he was right about one thin: There are some people who just must leave. I believe we must stand up for what is right and let the starving people starve, so we don't all starve.

People no longer can live happy lives.

Well of course, worker.

You spend the entirety of your miserable existence toiling at the hands of some rich jerk just so that you can make ends meet.

If I lived on a planet with a steadily rising population, I'd be praising Hitler too!!

Democrat or Republican?

Seriously though, we need to cut population growth, but in a more humane way. Don't create a "one-child policy" but something like higher taxes on people with three kids or more, and lower taxes for people with one or two kids.

People just don't understand the biological imperative that God gave us. My neighbors could starve because starving JoeSixPack, an underachieving loser that dropped out of school, is hogging all the foor. I wouldn't want my neighbor to desert me.

A very legitimate fear.  We should start rounding people up.  I suggest putting them into camps so that they can do some manual labor and then be killed.

Then I don't think your neighbors will need to worry about starving to death - unless, of course, they are part of the undesirables who will inevitably be shipped off to 'summer camp.'

Great.... Why do all trolls have to make us look bad?

Maybe that could be the right way to go, without death. OH WAIT! How can the population go down when people don't die.  Taxes are an idiot idea, and so is population control. Those are socialist poo ideas.

1. I never was suggesting for that this would help the population to go down, merely to help stabilize it.

2. Oh yes, because Socialism is way worse then Mass Death, The Spread of AIDs, Diseases, Plague, and Poverty. Damn Plutocrats.

The problem with this is that high birthrates are almost exclusively associated with the working poor in the Western world (this is a reversal from even a century ago: today the working poor, with the assistance of nutrient-poor fast food, are capable of just sustaining a large family; formerly it was wealthy landowners with large farms who were only capable of, and who needed, a large family). You'd be increasing taxes on the lower brackets, who would, of course, be incapable of paying.

Precisely. Our capacity to make food is growing faster than the population is.

Oh come on, can't you guys talk about this issue? You really think the world population can take 12 billion people? Because that'll be the situation in a time not far away if we don't do something.

The world population will stabilize soon enough.  Fertility rates are plummeting throughout the world.  Very few countries remain with very high fertility rates that aren't falling rapidly.

All of Europe, and nearly all of eastern Asia have fertility rates below the replacement level and much of South America is almost there.

Only the Middle East and Africa continue to have high fertility rates.

I fear resources being consumed by too many people and not being distributed in a way that allows survivors. Of course, that is just a freak nightmare once.

Well... you could use 1 pound of beef in your lasagna... or 10 1 pound eggplants...

Or just use 1 or 2 eggplants and send the other 8 to Africa.

For every level you separate yourself from the primary energy source, you lose about 90% of the energy.

If we could derive our energy from the sun, we'd use so much less energy.  Instead, we have to eat plants that derive it from the sun.  That's only 10% as efficient.

So basically.. in a field with 1000 clover plants, it could sustain 100 rabbits, which could in turn support 10 fox, which would in turn support 1 dog/wolf/whatever eats the fox.

Yes but if 1000 is how many resources we have and 100 is how many people we have, the 100 people may split the resources in a way that is unsustainable, leaving them all DEAD.

No.  Because we assume those 1000 resources are sustainable.

Now, what happens is that the population grows to the point where we need 2000 of that resource... so we use finite resources to produce those 2000... knowing that when we run out of the finite resource we'll be reduced back to 1000 or even less depending on the damage we did squeezing extra out...

Or... we can hope technology will allow us to sustainably get 2000 of the resource out of the same energy that produced 1000 before so we can keep the population without borrowing against our future.
