It appears she may be able to build a center-right coalition with the FDP.

There's a board called international elections. I suggest you follow the coverage there.

This thread is for people who want to discuss the general election in Germany and its possible international implications...

Not discussing the voting trends of the village of Fickendorf.

Pleased that Merkel has been re-elected Chancellor but remain wary of her new coalition partner - the FDP

What does this mean for ordoliberalism and the social market economy?

Well it's the best result we could hope for....I had almost given up hope for a stable CDU/FDP government in the days preceding the election.

All in all, even if you don't like the idea of this conservative government, I think the SPD desperately needs this time in opposition if they hope to become competitive again. A continuation of the "grand coalition" would have had negative effects on German democracy.

They deserve it. They're the only sane radical left-wing party in Europe.

All is relative, obviously. But SPD is far too moderate and need to abandon Schröder's legacy, and Die Linke is the only way to make them understand.

Though I would have mourned the disappearance of the brand "SPD", I found the nation of a German center-left split lengthwise into Green and Left parties polling in the mid-20s each very appealing. Sad And hey, maybe the Left could have changed its name.

Anyways, that beast ain't dead yet. As long as the Steinmeiers still have power in the party.

Thinking of the SED Die Linke at 20% is a damn nightmare. A nightmare.

Thank God the French version of Die Linke, Melenchon's little party created when a threw a hissy fit is a pathetic joke party. We don't need that type of junk.

He doesn't win any seats, he's irrelevant and he's mildly amusing at times.
