God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?

- Friedrich Nietzsche

Great quote. I think I will have to read The Gay Science after I am finished with my current book.

I probably should have posted that earlier.

oh, so he was an idiot, who mocked God and went insane...which is probably why I didn't fully grasp the meaning of his statement

I'm not a Nietzsche fan - I can accept that he was a clever man (if always a little nuts, even before the syphilis) and all that, but I've never been able to see much beyond the crazed self-importance. Admittedly, it doesn't help that his adherents have often been so unpleasant, in one way or another.

As for the statement itself... more than a little trite. If there was genius to Nietzsche it certainly doesn't show up in it.

Classic, yet always manages to raise a titter.

Don't like Nietzsche at all, really.

Dude, no.  He was just making an observation about what had happened.  Man adopting reason and humanism and abandoning the crude superstitions of the past.  With the passing of innocence/ignorance does go a certain 'wonder' or psychological capacity for emotion.

Most of people are completely unaware of the context of the quote. I agree with it, but it's not genius... the best example of his thought that I have read are in the aphorisms imo.

I remember Dali saying speaking about it:

"My father (or maybe his uncle) told me that God didn't exist, that God was for women [etc] and I found this idea very seductive and later I've read Nietzsche and I've been extremely disappointing to heard that this thing which didn't exist was dead..."
