Exactly.
Granted, he did wait before switching parties, but that could just be attributed to the political climate of Texas at the time (which was hardcore Democrat at the state and local levels even into the 70's when other southern states started going Republican). If he had been from the Carolinas, Kentucky, or Tennesse he would've defected earlier.
Also, Strom Thurmond endorsed him in the 1980 primaries.....what the hell?

Horrible human being.  I'm not happy about the idea of Rick Perry being the longest-serving governor in TX history, but considering that this trash is the man he's taking the record from, I'm not horribly crushed by it.
