Oh, wow.

Yeah, plenty of regionals are struggling and some big names might go under (Birmingham Post for one), and the Observer is clearly in trouble, but for a national daily paper to sink...

...I mean, the Indie is a shit paper these days and I wouldn't miss it, but...

When did the last one close? Today back in the 1980s?

Murdoch has already pulled his freesheet thelondonpaper - its last edition was today.

That's what happens when you treat your readers like children.

Today closed in 1995. I remember that and remember no one missing it. I think the last national to go under before Today would have been either the Daily Herald or the Daily Sketch... can't remember which though. Was about to suggest maybe the News Chronicle as well, but that was earlier. Amusingly enough, the Indy these days has a very similar readership base to the News Chronicle towards the end...

oh, I see O'Reilly v O'Brien has spilled overseas...might want to take whatever comes out from either side with a pinch of salt.

^^^^^^

Though in saying that I wouldn't mind The Irish Independent going bankrupt. Actually if this includes killing its sunday edition, I will rejoice at the news.

I've become more ambivalent towards the standard edition, but the end of the Sunday Indo would be doubleplusgood.
