Hardcore Republican. Even back in the ole days of the Great Depression Tulsa has been a Republican stronghold.

Tulsa County, OK:

1960: Nixon (R)
1964: Goldwater (R)
1968: Nixon (R)
1972: Nixon (R)
1976: Ford (R)
1980: Reagan (R)
1984: Reagan (R)
1988: HW Bush (R)
1992: HW Bush (R)
1996: Dole (R)
2000: W. Bush (R)
2004: W. Bush (R)
2008: McCain (R)

Oklahoma County, OK (where I live now):

1960: Nixon (R)
1964: Johnson (D)
1968: Nixon (R)
1972: Nixon (R)
1976: Ford (R)
1980: Reagan (R)
1984: Reagan (R)
1988: HW Bush (R)
1992: HW Bush (R)
1996: Dole (R)
2000: W. Bush (R)
2004: W. Bush (R)
2008: McCain (R)

What I find odd about Oklahoma is that the urban areas have a history of being more Republican and the rural areas have a history of going Democrat. Granted alot of the rural areas that go Dem are near Arkansas, but still is pretty odd.

I have a question…

I have a relative in Larimer County, Colorado where Fort Collins is the county seat. According to records here, Larimer has voted for the candidate who has carried Colorado in all elections since 1960, the furthest back this site tracks.

Does anyone know, or suspect, whether Larimer County has voted for the candidate who carried Colo. ever since the state entered the union (and got the vote) in 1876?

Larimer failed to go with the Colorado statewide winner in 1908, 1932, and 1948.

I believe you. But I wish I could verify this as well. For three times since 1876 … well, that is impressive.

Thank you!

IIRC the rural counties in Oklahoma which are close to Arkansas or Texas are mining areas and used to be Socialist strongholds in the 1900s. Quite interesting area.

Lancaster County NE has traditionally been a republican stronghold, with the exception of the 1936 and 1964 landslide elections. The county, particularly the city of Lincoln, has moved slowly leftward since the 1960's though and the defection of moderate republicans hurt McCain in '08.

I know we've had at least one thread on this, but I couldn't find it. How has your county voted for US President? Go as far back as you want.

Lane, OR

1860: Breckinridge
1864: McClellan
1868: Seymour
1872: Grant
1876: Hayes
1880: Hancock
1884: Blaine
1888: Harrison
1892: Harrison
1896: Bryan [yes, from 1876-1896, Lane managed to choose the popular-vote loser every time]
1900: McKinley
1904: Roosevelt
1908: Taft
1912: Wilson
1916: Hughes
1920: Harding
1924: Coolidge
1928: Hoover
1932: Roosevelt
1936: Roosevelt
1940: Roosevelt
1944: Dewey
1948: Dewey
1952: Eisenhower
1956: Eisenhower
1960: Nixon
1964: Johnson
1968: Nixon
1972: Nixon
1976: Carter
1980: Reagan
1984: Mondale
1988: Dukakis
1992: Clinton
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: Obama
I used to have family in Lane Co, OR. Nixon, Reagan 80 and Mondale 84 won by 2 pts or less. Since then it's been pretty solid Dem/Green.

I'm not giving my home county, but I'll use the main site and GeoElections to tell you its presidential voting record back to 1840.

1840: Van Buren (D)
1844: Clay (W)
1848: Cass (D)
1852: Pierce (D)
1856: Buchanan (D)
1860: Lincoln (R)
1864: McClellan (D) *gag*
1868: Grant (R)
1872: Grant (R)
1876: Tilden (D)
1880: Hancock (D)
1884: Cleveland (D, 53.0%)
1888: Cleveland (D, 55.7%)
1892: Cleveland (D, 50.1%)
1896: Bryan (D, 50.4%)
1900: McKinley (R, 50.2%)
1904: Roosevelt (R, 60.7%)
1908: Taft (R, 54.4%)
1912: Wilson (D, 32.5%)
1916: Hughes (R, 51.7%)
1920: Harding (R, 68.2%)
1924: Coolidge (R, 68.0%)
1928: Hoover (R, 65.6%)
1932: Roosevelt (D, 54.5%)
1936: Roosevelt (D, 54.6%)
1940: Willkie (R, 54.4%)
1944: Dewey (R, 56.4%)
1948: Dewey (R. 56.3%)
1952: Eisenhower (R, 64.2%)
1956: Eisenhower (R, 62.7%)
1960: Nixon (R, 55.7%)
1964: Johnson (D, 61.6%)
1968: Nixon (R, 49.2%)
1972: Nixon (R, 61.0%)
1976: Ford (R, 55.6%)
1980: Reagan (R, 48.2%)
1984: Reagan (R, 57.0%)
1988: Dukakis (D, 51.5%)
1992: Clinton (D, 45.2%)
1996: Clinton (D, 54.2%)
2000: Gore (D, 54.2%)
2004: Kerry (D, 53.4%)
2008: Obama (D, 57.8%)
2012: Obama (D, 55.3%)

What I find strange is that my home county was a major hub of lumbering in the 19th century and of auto manufacturing in the 20th century.  Although I always understood that lumbermen mostly voted Republican and auto workers mostly voted Democrat during that time, the data don't seem to show that here.

I'm sure there are a number of them in Texas, since that was the only state that went for Humphrey in '68 and Bush in '92.
