The tickets are the same as in real life but Rockefeller, the incumbent vice president, is nominated as running mate for President Ford. How does the general election play out?

Discuss, with maps if you wish.

A very narrow Ford reelection. Rockefeller helps in New York and Ohio. But, he hurts Ford in the south loosing both Virgnia and Oklahoma plus everything else that was already lost in the south. Rockefeller hurts Ford on the west coast, loosing him both Washington and Oregon. However, the election is not decided until the wee hours of Thursday morning when California is called very narrowly for Ford by less than 1% difference. Due to the republican base that has been in California from 1952 through that year 1976 and on, Ford barley holds on.

The two closest states in this election are Califorina and Wisconsin.

Hey, no so bad

By sacrificing Carter, Democrats would win 1980 (which would be almost certainly bad year for GOP) and saving U.S. and the world from Reagan

No way does Rockefeller hurt Ford on the west coast.  Rockefeller's brand of Republicanism would have been appealing to the voters of Washington, Oregon, and California in 1976.  If anything, Rockefeller helps Ford win these three states by larger margins.
