Let's say Bob Dole does not run in 1996, and instead John McCain chooses to run that year instead of waiting for 2000.  McCain sees a problem with a lack of conservative enthusiasm for his campaign so he asks Senator Phil Gramm of Texas to be his running mate.  What would the map look like?  Here is my guess:

McCain surely would run better campaign than Dole did, but Clinton was popular enough to beat any Republican challenger.

He could pick-up NH, NV , NM and defend Arizona, but maybe not pick up Florida.
