Seriously. I've read that:

-It's legal to grow cannabis in Iran, though this is due to its other purposes.
-It is therefore legal to possess marijuana.
-It is not legal to use it for psychoactive purposes or smoke it, however this is basically completely unenforced, largely due to the similarities between it and other legal herbs.

Iran arguably has a more tolerant policy than the Netherlands.

Maybe because they have more important stuff to deal with in the realm of drugs. I several times heard that heroin and crack of heroin had invaded their youth. Some statisticians pointed out that, at this pace, Iran would represent the half of the world consumption of heroin in 2020.

This regime really screwed its youth...

Eh, I think that the Middle-East generally is a lot more liberal with marijuana, as it has historically played a greater role in their society.

On the other hand though, alcohol is illegal, so the cultural thing goes both ways.

Gee, I wonder why that could be?

We obviously all do. Grin. Outside of the proximity of Afghanistan, this youth wouldn't go in it in these proportions if this regime could have some perspectives to propose them and if it wouldn't shut so much things to them.

Ah yes, there were the "hashishins", or something like this, which gave the term "assassin", in the old Persia, in an old Shiite sect. They were given that name because hashish helped them to commit the crimes they were missioned for. To sum it up in very short. I saw a TV documentary on that once on the french/german channel "arte".

I don't even like alcohol much so this would be a win situation for me if I was living in Iran.
