The original plan at the Constitutional Convention was for the President to be elected by Congress to a single 7-year term. I have therefore compiled a completely anarchonistic list of Presidents following this.

George Washington: 1789-1796
Thomas Jefferson: 1796-1803
James Madison: 1803-1810
Robert Smith: 1810-1817
James Monroe: 1817-1824
John Quincy Adams: 1824-1831
Andrew Jackson: 1831-1838
Martin Van Buren: 1838-1845
James Polk: 1845-1852
Lewis Cass: 1852-1859

John Frémont: 1859-1866
Ulysses Grant: 1866-1873
James Blaine: 1873-1880

Winfield Hancock: 1880-1887
Grover Cleveland: 1887-1894
Adlai Stevenson I: 1894-1901

Levi Morton: 1901-1908
William Howard Taft: 1908-1915

Woodrow Wilson: 1915-1922
Leonard Wood: 1922-1927
Herbert Hoover: 1927-1934

Franklin Roosevelt: 1934-1941
James Farley: 1941-1948

Thomas Dewey: 1948-1955
Adlai Stevenson II: 1955-1962
John Kennedy: 1962-1963
Stuart Symington: 1963-1970
Hubert Humphrey: 1970-1977
Jerry Brown: 1977-1984
Walter Mondale: 1984-1991
Al Gore: 1991-1998

Bob Dole: 1998-2005
George Bush: 2005-2012

Don't tell me it's stupid/implausible; I know that. But please do tell me where other candidates would work better.

I think you may mean alternate, rather than anachronistic.  Anachronistic would be, say, making Bob Dole president during the 1830s.

I would like to see Henry Clay instead of James K. Polk......I know that he was against the annexation of Texas but I still think he was a decent man.

It's both.

Out of interest, during the writing of the Constitution, the Vice Presidency wasn't included until a late stage. With this change of the Presidency, is there still a Vice President? Or is the Speaker or someone else next in the line of succession?

There isn't any line of succession (there were no plans for one at that stage of the Convention). Congress can get together fast enough to quickly elect a successor.
