I've had two Texas relatives call me, excitedly, to "break the news" in the past three hours, so I was sort of surprised to see it not on here.  (Both, by the way, were Democrats who are going to cross over and vote in the GOP primary for her)

I'd like to completely honestly wish her good luck.  Rick Perry is a disgraceful blot on a great state.

She's going to lose. Which is really too bad; she's a pretty decent politician.

You're being premature, though I agree that Perry has the upper hand.

Special election, eh? Well, the fact that the Democrats are in power won't help them in Texas.

Texas is pretty safe Republican now

So I'd support Hutchinson against HP Perry

I'll be crossing my fingers!  I have little doubt she'd do great things for Texas.  And I'd like to see her become a bigger voice within the party.

Bill White would be about as strong of a candidate the Democrats could get in Texas and the unpredictability of a special election would make it interesting, but yeah, still Lean R given the political climate right now..

It's pretty obvious who the most interesting of the most talked about Republican candidates would be.

It's actually Hutchison; Hutchinson is the former Senator from Arkansas. Smiley

Roughly 80% of Atlas posters seem to get it wrong.

Is it a special election in Texas, or does the governor appoint?

Appointment followed by special election in May.

Any speculation on who he might appoint and how much leverage it would give them going into the election?

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is supposedly the favorite. Of course, Texas has a ridiculous number of statewide elected offices, and the opportunity to move up to the Senate is rare, so the primary will probably still be a free-for-all.

I really hope she can beat Perry; any chance either of them runs as an Independent in the GE?

I imagine KBH would benefit more from an independent run.

And she might stay put.

So, wait. If she resigns, there's gonna be a special election in May, then another one in the nationwide elections in November?

Eh. Why not just do it in November? It probably saves the state and donors money, and they'll know how Minnesota felt.

I'm liking his website so far.

He probably won't win the primary, right?

I don't know. He was appointed to the Railroad Commission by GWB in 1998 and then became the first black statewide official elected in Texas history, having won elections in 2000, 2002, and 2008.  It's likely to be a crowded primary so he could win if he got enough support by virtue of sticking out.  And Texas isn't exactly Alabama, I don't think.
