Not if she planned on maintaining her role as "moderate" hero.

Yes. So would McCain. Don't be silly - they both said so during the campaign, and both knew that any hope of a change in America's image abroad depended on it.

This is why the issue didn't register during the campaign - Gitmo's fate was decided the day McCain sealed the Republican nomination.

There are even reports that back in 2005, President Bush wanted to close it down, but never acted on it.

Will Obama close Guantanamo? I noticed that he didn't have any plan on how to handle the aftermath of closing the place. He just said we'd close it in a year. $10 says he just said that to satisfy the left and we'll still be seeing it in 2 years...

Have you actually read the executive order to close the facility, by any chance?

Not to mention, isn't it kind of pointless to appease the left right now, and piss them off in two years, since they won't be voting on anything for four?

I remember Bush being like this ca. '00.  Either he was the world's most brilliant political strategist, or a bumbling fool, depending on whatever made it easier for the Democrats to pretend like they had high hopes, but became gradually disappointed.

And I think all three candidates would have, rather quickly.

I believe I heard that on CNN after President Obama signed the executive order.  I haven't taken the time to look up official sources, but I did hear it on CNN on Thursday, or whenever the E.O. was signed.  (I was listening to CNN TV while at work).

EDIT:  I could be wrong it what I heard, though, because according to an article I just found from January 2006, President Bush said Gitmo was 'necessary'.  So, I guess I'll have to stand corrected.

The article is found here:  http://kdka.com/national/President.Bush.Gitmo.2.262059.html

Sorry, but I don't buy that Hillary would have closed it. I think McCain may have and it certainly would have turned ugly with respect to his base afterward.

Hillary may have.  She was very focused on acting "tough" -- basically trying to stereotypically out-"man" the men -- an effort prompted I'm sure by pressures of being the first female president.

Hillary was always very concerned and indeed paranoid about appearing weak in the feminine sense, so I can't say that she would have done this.
