I put tremendous stock in intellect. And it is not something that is accurately measured by IQ, test scores, college grades, common sense or lack thereof or past voting record. It also has nothing to do with how politically savvy, street-smart or nice a person is. An intelligent person may be all those things. Or none of them.
Intellect, purely as I define it, is the ability of an individual to grasp complex issues and make progress in solving them.
I consider former President George H.W. Bush to be a man of solid intellect. Ronald Reagan, not so much -- BUT, with this caveat -- Reagan made up for a lack of intellect with tremendous instinct.
I consider Bill Clinton a man of solid intellect. Ditto, John Kerry.
Who are the dumbs? Gosh, George W. Bush easily. Robert Byrd is classically stupid on the Democratic side. It's wayyyy too early to say anything about Palin either way.
Most pols in both parties probably fall somewhere in between. And intellect alone is no guarantor of success. And if Clinton proved anything, it's hardly insulation against making personally stupid decisions.
I can only say what makes me, as a voter and a citizen, feel like we have our best chance of success as a nation. And it involves a candidate who...
*** seeks out and seriously considers the opinions of others, including those who disagree with him.
*** makes decisions based, when possible, on fact -- hard evidence, science, proof from multiple sources...as opposed to "going with his gut', taking some preacher's advice or following the liberal herd because -- well -- it's the liberal thing to do. A pox on them all!
*** reads books and likes books -- things with some substance. It doesn't all have to be Pascal and Dostoyevksy. And I have nothing against occasionally propping up a chair in the Oval office and getting a guffaw or two out of Marmaduke. But come on. Enough with the brain dead, already.
To be honest, I am confident that Obama and Biden posess sound intellect. And I am pretty sure the same is true of McCain. Like I say, Palin? It's too early to tell and we err if we run in either direction.
