On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton of New York does well in the super tuesday primaries and those after, and wins the democratic nomination on the first ballot at the democratic convention. She selects Tom Vilsack of Iowa as her running mate.

On the republican side, John McCain of Arizona wins a narrow victory on the first ballot at the republican convention and he selects Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania as his running mate.

Which ticket would win in this matchup? Discuss with maps.

He would lose places where the religious right dominate if he nominates pro-choice Ridge. Say good-bye to MO, AK, VA and WV....and McCain + Ridge.... Kiss Colorado Springs GOTA good-bye.

but still, enough states near PA and the sunbelt will be republican enough for the election to swing.

Ridge wouldn't hurt in Pennsylvania.  Republicans lost it by 2.5 pts in 04.  However, I don't think the VP has much weight even if he was a home state former governor.

Ridge wouldn't hurt or help in PA. He would hurt McCain with the base but not enough to cost McCain significantly.
