One other question. I was reading this article: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/11/24/2099988.htm

And this section caught my eye as odd:

Isn't voting mandatory, so shouldn't turn out always be big and not really a question at all?

Well, there is still variation. There are those who don't turn out for all sorts of legitimate and illegitimate reasons (in the latter case it's a matter of some slight hassle and a reasonable fine, so if you really have to miss it you might choose to pay up).  I know of an Australian who is on a plane from London right now, about to land in Mexico City - here is a voter who isn't likely to vote (business trip, couldn't be postponed, all is legit Smiley  ).

Anyway, there could be a low turnout of, say, 89%, or a high turnout of 96%.  or an average turnout of 93% - whatever.

Oh ok, makes sense. Thanks. Smiley

What was interesting was that in 2004 there were three polls out on election day.

Two had Labor leading 51/49 and 54/46

one outlier.. the Nielsen poll had the Libs ahead 54/46... and that was the one that was right.

I voted at 8am this morning (I had stuff to do) - going to a party to watch the results come in about 2 hours.

If Howard manages to win... I think I'll scream.

When are the results in? I can't seem to get to sleep tonight so I need something to do.. (It's now 5:16AM here)

EDIT: @Polnut, the funny thing is that yet again Neilsen has produced an outlier, 57\43 to ALP as opposed to 52\48 of the other polls. Somehow I feel very odd knowing this.

Am I right to suggest that polls close in 90 minutes?

Polls close at 6 PM AEDT, which is 11 ahead of GMT if I'm counting right.

I predict a net 18 seat pickup for Labor in the House and that PM Howard will lose his seat to McKew by about 5% in the 2PPV.

Exit poll - Labor win

Updated: 18:28, Saturday November 24, 2007

The Sky News Exit Poll predicts Labor will win the election with 53 per cent support on a two party preferred basis.

The poll indicates the Coalition has 47 per cent support on a two party preferred basis.

The results indicates a 7 per cent swing to Labor.

The Sky News Exit Poll also predicts the results in two marginal seats: Bennelong and Eden Monaro.

There is particular interest in the seat of Eden Monaro, because it's seen as a litmus test for national sentiment.

In past elections, whichever party has won Eden Monaro has won the election.

The Sky News Exit Poll predicts Labor will win Eden Monaro with 58 per cent support on a two party preferred basis.

And in what could be bad news for John Howard, the Exit Poll indicates he'll lose his seat to Labor's Maxine McKew.

The Exit Poll prediction on a two party preferred basis for Bennelong is 53 per cent support for Labor and 47 per cent support for the Coalition.

So are these exit polls American-style ones that are kind of right, or European-style ones that are generally dead on?

Live Election Coverage in Windows Media Player - already going

Nine: mms://news.netshow.ninemsn.com.au/9MSNLive
(stream seems to crap out after ten minutes or so)

ABC: http://www.abc.net.au/streaming/election.asx

Has anyone found live streams from Ten or Seven?

Is the ABC one not working for everyone, or is my computer messed up?

Australians may be the worst people in the world to exit poll.

So many will either tell people to mind their own business or play about and lie.

I'm not quite ready to give anything to them yet.

Both streams are working for me - make sure you are putting the link into the "Open URL" dialog (Ctrl-U)  ABC is on sports at the moment - election coverage begins in 2 minutes.  Nine is already doing election coverage.
