Suppose that the Iraq war takes a huge turn for the worse, causing Kucinch and Paul to win their party's nominations. How does it go?

amazingly I think you found a situation where Kuchinch would be the more moderate candidate, and as such he wins, by a fairly large margin too.

I would say this election between Congressmen Kuchinch and Paul would be surprisingly pretty close. Kuchinch would narrowly take New Mexico and Ohio to win the Presidency of the United States and thus become 44th President.

Dennis Kuchinch/Bill Richardson (D): 273 EV, 49.8%
Ron Paul/Chuck Hagel (R): 265 EV, 49.4%
Others (Constitution, Socialist ect.) 0 EV, 0.8%

Kucinich would actually hold most of the Democratic base. Paul would fracture the Republican base.

Kucinich wins.

That still wouldn't cause either of them to win the nominations.

A prowar candidate splits the Republican base, causing Kucinich to win in a landslide.

Kuicinich wins with very low turnout and a strong 3rd party.
