I want every day to be a public holiday for the government.

It is over here (well, it's a Bank Holiday anyway. Which is the same thing, basically). Traditionally shops are open in the morning and shut in the afternoon.

Here too.  Well, it was a university-wide holiday.  Actually, all students, faculty, and staff were off Friday.  Additionally, students and faculty were off Monday.  Nice four-day weekend.  Although I think the hourly staff had to report to work on Monday.  At least I saw the secretaries and physical plant people working on Monday.

I vote yes.  Holidays are good.  Washington, Christmas, MLK, Good Friday, you name it.  I don't think Capitalism will crumble just because the stocks are closed once in a while, and frankly we Yankees, just like you Brits, need a little more appreciation of leisure time.  We both make fun of the French, but you know we're all just a bit jealous of that part of their culture.

How do we celebrate?  Round up all the unmarried Thai women between 13 and 17 and auction them off to lonely, amoral, fabulously wealthy bidders?  Something like that?  Problem is, it's about as politically incorrect a holiday as I can imagine.  Not that I'm a fan of the thought police, but I do recognize the need to move toward more "inclusive" holidays and away from "White Man's Day" or "National Afro-American Day" or "Opebo Day"  The nice thing about PC holidays like MLK Day and Good Friday is that they celebrate nice men.  Men who wanted to, in some way, save the world.  Save everyone.  Whether or not you agree with anything King or Jesus had to say, you have to admit that these men make for much better heroes than Opebo.

Still, as I said, all holidays are good holidays, so run it up the flagpole.  While we're at it, Ramadan lasts a whole month.  How's that for a school holiday?!

Can I get a "Salaam" bro?

No, getting Easter Sunday and Spring Break is enough.

Does anyone here get Jewish Holidays off? When I was in school, we got 2 Fridays off in the Fall, one for Rosh Hashanah and one for Yom Kippur. This is because Connecticut has one of the largest Jewish populations in the Country.

when I was a student at Boston University we gots lots of them.  When I worked for the federal government we didn't get any, but we got a whole week for christmas, which is even better.

I still say Ramadan beats all those, since it's a whole month.

No - if my Baptist school doesn't give it off - it's not a Christian holiday that should be gotten off Tongue

(They're quite conservative too - which surprises me - we get a 1/2 day though)

Your Baptist school has complete authority over what is and isn't a Christian holiday?

I believe in Leviticus it says that Good Friday is not nor should it ever be a Christian holiday. It then says that punishment for taking off on Good Friday is stoning like everything else, except getting stoned it seems.

Ah, leviticus also says not to spill your seed on the ground.

Remember the contest on Seinfeld that George won?  George really didn't win, you know.

On a brighter note, you'll all be glad to know that on Good Friday, when my university gave me the day off, I took my punishment.  And just for good measure, I was stoned again on Saturday and again on Sunday and again on Monday, which was a holiday for us.

Colin was joking... the event that Good Friday is all about (the crucifixion of Jesus Christ) kind of hadn't happened yet at the time Leviticus was written.

Yeah, I got it.  And that the Stones lyric "everybody must get stoned" has a different connotation than the times when people got "stoned" in the Old Testament.  And that the holidays a small evangelical protestant academy somewhere in Flyover Country sanction might not be universally agreed upon among Christians.  And that there are still those who'd probably stamp out all holidays with origins even remotely associated with organized religion and replace them with Earth Days and Celebrate Diversity Days and Handgun Free Days and Put_Your_Name_Here Against Drunk Driving Days.

Really, I'm keeping up hoss.  But thanks.

No. You're misinterpreting the Old Testament.

Also, that's a Bob Dylan lyric.

Yeah, Bob Dylan.  Boomhauer was the only one who can really understand Dylan.  And apparently Dylan is the only one who really understands Boomhauer.  Both visionary and wise, but a little hard to understand, they are.  If Hank is King of the Hill, then Boomhauer is definitely the Sage of the Hill.  His philosophical soliloquys have touched us all.

Man, I watch way too much television.

I would be politically incorrect to acknowledge a holiday of the majority
