I've never been a poll worker in the past. Mostly because I like to spend the day doing GOTV work, and also because frankly I'm so anxious waiting for results to come in and love tracking them that I couldn't imagine sitting in some polling place tallying up votes instead.

However this year we have some Minneapolis City Council elections. And despite being my city, I'm not invested in them at all unlike state and presidential elections. Because there's nothing else on the ballot unless some referendum makes it, so the election basically boils down to "will one group of insufferable assholes or another group who are also insufferable assholes for completely different reasons hold a majority on the council?"

So yeah if there's any election to do that for this would make sense...

Yes. I've been doing it for a couple years. It's easy money and you get out relatively quickly in time to watch the coverage at home.

Yes! I am actually surprised you've never been a poll worker before. It can be tiring but also quite satisfying.

And if you are a young person, people treat young poll workers with the same quiet awe that a birder would treat when spotting a rare specimen in the wild

I've been doing it for like 3 years and I am the only poll worker under the age of 60.

I did it twice in 2012 and 2014 (2016?). It was a nice payout for one day of work as a teenager, and an interesting look at the nuts-and-bolts of democracy.
