One of the persons i like to talk about. Why? Because i really dislike "normal politicians" (whom i usually call "loyal soldiers of corresponding army"), and like mavericks. And Larry was more, then maverick - he was "an exception", even in the 1970th, when really conservative Democrats (and really liberal Republicans) still existed. But even such "bona fide conservatives" as Phil Gramm, Bob Stump and John Rarick were no match to Larry. Interesting enough - he was "an exception" (at least for Southern congressman) in one more aspect: he was more right wing conservative then racist. Usually in the South congressman was either more moderate, say, on economy, then on race (a lot of examples from Bilbo to Wallace) or (in rare cases) equally conservative. Larry was, of course, no liberal on Civil rights (especially - given that all main Civil rights laws were already enacted, and it was foolish, for example, to agitate for segregation in 1970 as many southern politicians did in 1950th or even 1960th), but his main "features" were anticommunism and "general conservatism". Civil rights were "derivative" from consistently conservative approach to all issues, especially given that his district was no more then 10% Black. We are very different politically, but such "exceptions" make political life more unpredictable, and thus (for me at least) - more interesting. It can be said, that he even "died for the cause of his life" - on board of famous jet))))
