It wouldn't surprise me that much. There would probably be more open transgender people online than irl because many are in the closet irl and feel more open expressing themselves online. And like others said, many (such as myself) were on this forum before we discovered we were transgender, and since the vast majority of forum users are born male, this skews the results.

I don't find it unusual Given Atlas's unique demographics which skew heavily LGBTQ.

While I don't consider the significant number of Trans women at all bothering, I continue to be disappointed pointed in the overall lack of women, transor Sis, in the forum. Not unusual for Many realms of the Internet, but it does leave A gaping hole in many discussions involving gender issues.  That is it creates the atmosphere of a boy's club with overly frequent mansplaining.

I predict this thread will go round in circles and lead to no particularly interesting conclusions, much like the last 500 times this has come up, precisely because the number of people with any insight into why women, cis or trans, do (or don't) whatever they do is so limited here.

I do agree with that. However, I'm not exactly convinced that this affects our community's demographics, as while I can name more autistic/neurodivergent trans women on this forum than cis ones, I think that (proportionally and relatively) the population of cis men on this forum is more autistic than the population of trans women, although I can admit that this may come from a small sample size and/or confirmation bias. idk

In my experience niche online spaces and forums like this lean ridiculously heavy male, upwards of 95%. Not only that, but they also lean heavily LGBT (generally between 35 and 55% LGBT)

Given that, it is not too surprising that trans women and cis women are roughly tied in the site. Trans people make something about 10% of the LGBT population (since LGBT people seem to be 5-10% of the general population and gender non-conforming people around 0.5-1%), so you'd expect Atlas to be 5% cis women and 2-5.5% trans women. The earlier point about autism probably helps explain why it is closer to the higher end of the range; as well as age (both LGBT and trans prevalence are higher among the young)

As to the reasons for why this place is so heavily male, I have no idea; especially when in-person activism and even more general spaces like Twitter are way closer to gender parity. Maybe one of the (cis) women in here could answer this?

The LGBT point however is easy to explain, as LGBT people have historically had plenty of reason to care about politics (and they still do).

The second one is the only one that discriminates between L, G and B, and that one shows 24% identity as gay or lesbian and 15% as bi or pan

The one I created, the October 2020 one, has different options for different genders/sexualities, although gay/lesbian are merged. 24% of respondents identified as gay or lesbian.


Actually, looking at that specific poll, I think that answers the question posed by this thread. Both the option for cis women and trans women were at 3.4%, although the second figure could be undercounted as there was 2.1 non-binary in this poll without an option to select both that and trans. But even still, while I do hypothesize that there are more trans women than cis women on this forum, it's not "far more."
