What do you of the controversial liberal leader ? Do you think he really did hire a hitman to kill his ex lover ?

He was acquitted of that charge, take your slander elsewhere.

He was indeed acquitted, that is totally fair comment.

It is, however, equally fair comment that literally nobody - including in his own party - genuinely and confidently agreed with that verdict. The judge's summing up was almost hilariously biased, and was memorably satirised by Peter Cook just days later.

I'm being sarcastic, it's obvious he was guilty of the very least tax evasion, blackmail and conspiracy to intimidate as well as commissioning the murder of a dog and he was probably guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.

He also appeared to know about Cyril Smith's paedophilic nature, and did nothing.

It's not often that an actual comic book villain ends up in charge of a milquetoast centrist third-party. Pretty iconic honestly.

You should watch the BBC television drama about Thorpe and his downfall - A Very English Scandal. Brilliant and hilarious.

A Very English Scandal is indeed one of the best things the BBC has done in recent years, and does a fantastic job of portraying Thorpe as the magnetic, fiercely politically principled (with many of these principles being rather good), yet personally morally bankrupt individual he was, who in another life may have done something rather more notorious than lead the Liberal Party.

Reading the book was what prompted me to make this thread.
