And I never said that present-day Democrats were racist.  But racism is as much a part of the Democrats' history as nativism and Watergate are part of the Republicans' history.

No one votes on issues that were relevant more than thirty years ago.  That's why bringing them up constantly is silly and unnecessary.
But it's still part of their history.  It may not be as relevant, but isn't history always relevant, no matter how much things have changed since then?

That doesn't give you the right to drone on about something for the sake of partisan hackery.  The Founding Fathers weren't exactly a slave's best friend either, but that doesn't mean we completely reject their principles.  You know very well the Democratic Party of today isn't the same as it was half a century ago, nor the Republican Party.  Hell, the whole country is very different from what it was generations ago, and not even the most ardent opponents of slavery saw African-Americans as equal to Whites.

I'm not trying to excuse crimes of the past by any means, but the truth is that hardly anyone in history isn't guilty of racism in some form.  Keep this in mind next time you want to call the Democrats "the party of the KKK" or whatever.
First, many of the Founding Fathers, even some who owned slaves, went on record as opposing slavery.  Second, Thaddeus Stevens saw blacks as equal to whites, and he opposed slavery.  As for your final statement, let me give you an example: a candidate for elected office in your community was once an ax murderer and killed several people 20 years ago.  Does that make you want to vote for him/her, no matter how much he/she may have changed since then?

Do you refuse to visit Germany because of Hitler?
No, but if a German who was associated with Hitler or the Nazi Party came along somewhere, would you want anything to do with him/her, no matter how much they may have changed?

Wow, what the f**k did I just read.

First of all, The Founding Fathers' commitment to private property rights, limited government, and intersectional harmony prevented them from making any significant move against slavery.  Indeed, many of them did own slaves and renounced it afterwards, but just because they opposed it afterwards doesn't make them any less guilty of it as individuals.  And because they placed the aforementioned values above those of liberty for all men -- including slaves -- we can't seriously consider them as men who considered Blacks to be on the same level as Whites.

Secondly, are you seriously trying to compare the past actions of an individual to the history of a political party?  Do I actually have to explain that all those Democrats who supported slavery are long dead and the people who comprise the Democratic Party today in no way resemble the people in the Democratic Party of the 1800s?

I'm not even taking this conversation seriously anymore.
